I'm using V8 (firmware 2.5). Do you have any more info about V9?

Any particular reason why you're not using firmware v2.7?

V8 came out late last year, so I would expect V9 will be out towards the end of 2006 and include the latest map data available at the time. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Sorry Trajet, didn't want to cause any hurt feelings for V7 users. I just thought it sounded like Milkfloat had some inside info on V9.
Aitch2 - I had a look at all the improvements offered by 2.7 and as far as I could see there weren't any that I particularly needed. So I'm following the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' principle.

I have inside information on what will eventually be in V9 but not when it will arrive. |

I gave Mavis a proper run for her money today, instead of just locally. I am going to a Proms in the Park in Bedford in August and need to pick up people at Luton airport on the way. So I set off for Swindon, having used a POI for Luton. What should have taken me no longer than an hour and a half (allowing for heavy traffic on the M1), took 3 1/2 hours. For some obscure reason Mavis directed me from Swindon straight through the centre of Oxford and then what seemed to be via Scotland.
I then put in the postcode for Bedford Park and set off for there. Mavis directed me straight into a parking garage situated in a cul de sac which meant I had no option but to go into the parking garage, and pay 50p to get straight out again!
Once in Bedford, after a few hiccoughs involving one way streets (which seem to have recently been changed, judging from the overpainted roadmarkings), I found the park.
Coming home I set it to shortest hoping Mavis would use her head and take me home via Milton Keynes as I knew this WAS the shortest route. Yes, all was well, until I was about 20 minutes from home, then I was taken down progressively smaller B roads. I followed Mavis's instructions, as I only know one route and Mavis might well have shown me a short cut. But as I've always maintained, the definition of a shortcut is that it is the longest route between two points.
Total journey time for what should have been a 3 hour trip = 7 hours!
Moral of the story? Follow i3's instruction up to a point, but if you can see they are obviously wrong (ie directing you to go straight on when the road signs clearly indicate that you should be turning left), use your own judgement.
I did see some beautiful countryside though, and it was a lovely day, plus I had some excellent new CDs which I was able to listen to.... several times |

EDIT: That should have read "set off FROM Swindon" not "FOR Swindon". |

I went to Garmin (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=995) for my info, there's no mention of WAAS/EGNOS there. I would appreciate it if you could tell me what these are and why I need them.
Regards,

They are a set of satellites which provide correction information to your GPS unit to help improve the accuracy. The European system (EGNOS) is still in testing and there is debate about if it is providing useful information at the moment.
There is a discussion here:

Not that I profess to anything but a very light knowledge of the subject; Does anyone know if the EGNOS data is supplemental to the regular GPS signal or a complete replacement for it? If it's supplemental then surely if the EGNOS data isn't available then it will fall back to regular GPS anyway? As mentioned running in EGNOS will deplete batteries faster but when running off the power lead why not run in this mode for increased accuracy? _________________ Chas
