Can anyone please tell me if there is a hand-held GPS receiver available, which provides a display using the Ordnance Survey Grid rather than Latitude/Longitude?

The reason for asking about this is that on standard OS maps, the Lat-Long referencing is only available on the map edge, whereas the OS Grid is visible from the map body. So when you're lost in mist with a gale blowing and you can only view a small section of a map, then you would be able to cross reference the location using the OS Grid anf find your way home!

Any advise gratefully received.

Thanks.

I think most, if not all Garmin GPS receivers can display the OS format grid references. I have a Geko 201 and from memory, you need to go into SETUP, UNITS and change it from the default to British.

Yup, in the Settings panel, my Etrex can be set to any one of over 100 worldwide Map Datums, one of which is the good old GB Ord Survey datum, which I use too as I have not yet got into Lat/Lon etc.

It displays your position with two letters and 10 (2x5)numerals, eg TQ 12265 62742, so you have to mentally abbreviate the OS ref to 122 627.

I's probaly much the same for all the Garmins.

Certainly all the Garmins have the capability to display your position using a large number of reference systems.

Even the Geko 101 and the eTrex which are basic entry level GPS receivers have this functionality.

All the Garmin GPS units will give you a location in Ordnance Survey Grid format. Virtually all Garmins support more than 100 different datum for displaying positions, although the cheapest Geko 101 has only 18 (including OSGB).

If you are going to do a lot of hiking with your GPS, then you may want to consider the more expensive ones with an electronic compass and barometer built-in.

As an aside, I tried turning on the grid lines on my GPS-V but the lines shown on the screen are drawn in degrees, minutes and seconds - this doesn't change if you select a different map datum. A bit disappointing really, it would be nice if it would show the OSGB grid when I have that datum selected.

Enjoy!
