Just found this Press Release and it seems to bolster Steve101'sarument about the Republic's map info being held back.
Release date: 18 Oct 2005
NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has finished mapping Northern Ireland and in doing so has become the first company to offer a fully detailed navigable map of the entire United Kingdom and surrounding territories - the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are included as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Now available to NAVTEQ direct customers*, the Northern Ireland map comprises 15,872 miles of roads enabling navigation systems to give drivers turn by turn directions to and from any address in the Province. The coverage, which is fully detailed, includes every single public road in Northern Ireland and every single mile was driven and verified by teams of NAVTEQ field researchers.
There are 2,150 Points of Interest in 40 categories including hotels, railway stations, restaurants and also the seven ferry connections to England, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The motorways, A roads and B roads of Northern Ireland link seamlessly to the Republic of Ireland's motorways, National and Regional roads. Intertown connecting roads in the Republic have been in the NAVTEQ database for some time and completion of the Republic of Ireland map is expected to follow by the end of this year.
Ends
*Due to the highly complex process of updating and integrating NAVTEQ data into navigation systems and location-based solutions, it may take up to a year before these new maps are available to end customers in their navigation systems. |

As you will see, Republic of Ireland has increased very little over a year. |
Steve101 - You are a genious. How the hell did you find this???
I suspected by the map diagrams that Ireland's coverage hadn't changed since Q4 2004 map updates. I believe the new CoPilot 6 STILL uses the old Q4 2004 maps. Navteq have released new Q3 2005 maps but it seems to take the software developers a long time to implement it into their related products. They have to do a lot of additional work with the interface, route calculations, speed limits etc. It isn't as simple as Navteq finishing the maps and Bob's your Uncle unfortunately.
Steve101 - You can easily tell what maps Co-Pilot 6 is using because if it doesn't have full street level coverage of Northern Ireland then it definately is using the Q4 2004 maps and NOT the new Q3 2005. |

I quote from the following link:

Map Coverage
CoPilot Live 6 incorporates the latest street maps of Europe...
It will be interesting to find out how accurate that statement actually is. |

vipergrm - I know there is more to making maps than just driving up the road and appreciate that its a monumentous task. It just appears that the Rep. of Ireland has been neglected. In my opinion a dozen or so new roads and a few updated ones doesn't require a full 12 months, irrespective of how much extra work is required to merge maps with an application (CP6).
Copilot 6 does indeed have 100% coverage of Northern Ireland, so therefore uses the up-to-date maps for this year.
I think the new big buttons in CP6 are a bit difficult to get used to. Being that they are all in alphabetical order. I messed around with the settings on my PPC (Mitac Mio 168) and somehow managed to change it back to the original qwerty keyboard. Having a choice of keyboards is good though. |

Have a look at the difference between these two websites with regard to Rep. of Ireland maps.
www.maporama.com
www.mapquest.com
Maporama is pretty much how Rep. of Ireland looks in CP6. On the other hand, Mapquest is full with roads, including most of the backroads.
I think both use Navteq maps. But I may be wrong. However, I think you will agree, there is a big difference between the two. Maybe this time next year, this will be the level of mapping in CP7? |

Mapquest is very strange for Ireland and is definitely not using NavTeq maps.
At Monasterevin there should be a new motorway which opened over a year ago. It's on the latest NavTeq maps like CP6 and Maporama BUT Mapquest definitely DOES have every hamlet listed like no other digitall map I have seen.
Can any one explain this? |

I agree with you completely. I find it very annoying that everything is such a big secret at times. It's nearly impossible to find out the coverage of a map. Having checked the latest Navteq update from Maporama, Ireland coverage doesn't seemed to have improved at all since Q4 2004. I do know however, that they are almost completed, if not already. The only annoyance is it seems to take forever to be released. I e-mailed Navteq about Ireland coverge and it seemed I got an automatic reply stating that it wasn't fully covered yet and they were working on it.
It would be interesting to find out what version maps Copilot 6 uses. Maporama has had full NI coverage since around March time. It could be Mapquest may be using Q3 2005 maps which may have Ireland updated further. I'm only guessing here. May not be completely accurate. |

I'm pretty sure they are using Navteq maps. You can tell because the Navteq logo is at the bottom right of the map. |

I rang ALK yesterday re my upgrade to CP6, and the person I spoke to said that they are the latest Navteq maps (athough he couldn't provide the version details)
Phone answered straight away - and the whole call (including the prerecorded messages at the beginning) under 4 minutes!
Customer service is looking OK. |

As no exact %age coverage figures are given, you can assume that the maps will not be the latest. They never are, ALK don't mention the release date which is further proof. Coverage of Spain and Portugal is the killer issue for me and ALK are hiding the coverage figures/map dates. Not good. |

They seem to use a combination of Navteq and maps from a company called "AND Data Ireland". Garmin have been using data from AND Data Ireland for years too. _________________ Gone fishing! |

If they are not the latest, they could find themselves in trouble. Their website clearly states that they are, and as you can see in an earlier post, they even confirmed it to me when I asked about the maps yesterday. |

Depends on the definition of 'latest'. It could be "the latest maps avialable before we converted to our format and produced the Gold application".
That process could have taken them 6months to a year. Unless they specify the date of release its meaningless. |

I was just thinking about maybe why there isn't a good update for Republic of Ireland this year in Copilot 6. I think it may be due to the fact that as there are more people in the UK that will buy CP6, it seems logical for ALK to buy the most up-to-date maps of the UK from Navteq. On the other hand, as there is only a small percentage of people in the Republic of Ireland that buy a GPS system like Copilot, ALK would sooner buy older maps from Navteq, thereby cutting their costs.
The Republic of Ireland maps are covered well enough for people from the UK visiting the Republic of Ireland on holiday or for business. Most people tend to stick to the main roads when travelling in another country anyway. I don't think its a case of not having the maps available or not having the time to integrate it with CP6. Its just a cost cutting exercise. In a years time, and with being able to advertise virtually 100% coverage of R.O.I., more people in R.O.I. will buy a GPS knowing full well that it has a 100% coverage for the country. So now ALK can pay more for the up-to-date maps of R.O.I., but now it will be able to offset the cost of the maps because of the big increase in customers from R.O.I. I suppose this 'could' be the case. It is only a thought!!!
I still think ALK should re-word their advertising, as their interpretation of improved coverage (for R.O.I.) isn't the same as everyone elses. I don't think ALK are telling porkies as such, but bending the truth to their own ends. |
