They have been used to tell passengers whether their buses are running on time.

But Global Positioning Systems could make sure your pizza gets to you piping hot.

A satellite system, a pair of trainers and headphones will all make it possible, so delivery drivers can be given exact directions to someone's home - without getting lost.

Many pizzas have been delivered late in Notts because delivery drivers can not find the exact address - despite consulting maps.

Now Domino's Pizza is now using GPS to track exactly where the driver is - and where the pizza needs to be.

Domino's bosses hope it will cut the number of wasted pizzas. Satellite systems will track the driver's whereabouts using a signal given off from specially made trainers.

This information is then converted into a map on their computers and directions are read out in their earpieces.

The kits will be distributed over the next 12 months to Domino's shops in West Bridgford, Bulwell, Beeston, Mapperley Plains and Stapleford.

Bernadette Eddisford, spokeswoman for Domino's Pizza, said: "The majority of late pizzas are the result of lost delivery drivers who have been hindered by obscured door numbers, houses with names, longer driveways, higher security gates and an ever-increasing number of new housing developments.

"In the East Midlands alone, the Government is projecting an extra 293,000 households would have been built by 2021.

"We promise prompt delivery of hot pizza and when something gets in the way of that, we're obliged to find a way to fix it. "

The system has been created by GPS manufacturers, Navman, who have helped develop and make the tracker trainers, headpiece and computers.

John Whitehead, of the company, said: "It won't be long before this type of service becomes commonplace."

Domino's employs almost 4,500 drivers in the UK covering an estimated 130,000 miles a day, delivering more than a million pizzas a month.
