We are delighted to welcome Corinne Vigreux, Director of TomTom, to the PocketGPSWorld.com GPS Event and she has agreed to draw the prizes. The Prize Draw will take place promptly at 13:00.

At each of our events our sponsors and participants have been very generous, but this time all our expectations have been exceeded. We have over £3,500 of equipment donated to our Prize Draw, with more still to come.

Is there a way to enter the draw if we cannot or do not wish to attend the event (which is probably the case for the vast majority of your readers).

Thanks...

Hi Nick, it's something we will consider for subsequent events but for this one only those attending the show will be able to paricipate in the prize draw. The administration involved in doing otherwise are not feasible currently.

Hello,

Whilst your prize draw has all the best intentions for raising much needed cash for a good cause, I would just like to bring to your attention that under the small lotteries act, your offer of 5 tickets for £8 is illegal.

A person spending £8 to purchase 5 tickets would have an unfair advantage over another person that chose to purchase 4 tickets on separate occasions. This renders the lottery illegal.

Just letting you know in case you fall foul of the law.

Regards,
Nige

I suspect that was a typo as we didn't propose to give discounts for buying multiple tickets although I'm not sure I follow as to how someone purchasing 5 tickets in one go would have an advantage over some else buying them individually other than an extra ticket in your analogy?

Surely that would always be the case, the more tickets you buy the better your chances?

I'm now busily digesting the small print of the applicable legislation and will ensure our draw complies Smile

OK, just a quick explanation re the advantage side of things. A raffle is down to pure luck where no player has any unfair advantage over another. The important word here is 'unfair'. It is entirely up to an individual as to how many tickets they purchase for any raffle/lottery but the law states that each individual should not have an unfair advantage over any other. In the case of these tickets, if a person were to buy 4 separate tickets at £2 each, they would have 4 chances of winning for their £8. However with the offer mentioned at the top of this forum (not a typo) it states that for £8 an individual can purchase 5 tickets. That means that a person that spends £8 in one transaction has an unfair advantage over a person that spends £8 in 4x £2 transactions. i.e. 5 chances verses 4 chances.

Although it may seem petty, it's the law (gaming and small lotteries act) (no, I wouldn't be the one to go running to the authorities!) and I just thought that you'd want to stay on the correct side!

This is why that wonderful instirution 'The National Lottery' does not give any kind of discount for multiple ticket sales - they just get their money by giving crap odds on the winning tickets but that's another story!!

Cheers, that makes sense, it was a typo and we had and have no intention of offering discounts for buying more than one ticket Smile

I've now digested the rules imposed by the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976 and the Lotteries Regulations 1993 and the fog is beginning to clear. There is conflicting advice on different sites as to the ticket cost, one states it can be no more than £1 per ticket with another stating the limit is £2?

At the end of the day we are not making any deductions for admin costs, costs of tickets etc, 100% of the money raised will be going to the nominated charity but I understand the need to compy with the regulations and appreciate the 'heads-up'!

Carl,

Laughing Out Loud, yes we do, it's been confirmed for quite some time now!

It's at the Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke on Saturday 26th Nov 10am - 2pm

See here.

Registration was closed last week when we reached our 750 capacity limit but there are a limited number of places remaining due to cancellations.

Would it be possible/legal, for say a monthly draw through out the year to make money to help fund the PGPSW site??

Not legal as we're not a charity. The best way to support the site is to make a donation if you use and like the camera database.

Darren, don't the TV and Radio stations get round this by having a quiz type of thing and premium rate numbers ?? the answers are always so simple that it is in effect a draw! If this is a way around the charity thing , are the numbers that visit this site enough to justify any setting up costs .People are more inclined to give if there is a chance they might win something besides the information they can get from this site Wink Smile

I bought some tickets after I had explained I would not be staying until the draw and had been promised that the winning ticket numbers would be posted on the web site. I don't find them.
