On July 16th 2003, Dell reported some problems with Windows Mobile 2003 performance issues on the Dell Axim hardware.
Dell have now confirmed what the problem is and expects to post the update, a whopping 28MB file that updates the Axim's read-only memory, on its website by Wednesday. The company will also contact customers with affected Axim X5 models to inform them of the update, a company representative said.
The company updated the handheld with the Windows Mobile 2003 software in late June in an effort to offer new features and improve performance. But the upgrade backfired by introducing a glitch that actually slowed down the handheld's performance.
Many new Dell Axim X5 owners discovered the issue in early July when their orders for the handhelds began arriving. Dell acknowledged the problem on July 16, saying the problem was related to software it created to work with the Microsoft operating system. Dell halted shipments of new Axim X5 handhelds on the same day.
These problems have now been addressed. Please be aware that this patch is only for Pocket PC 2003 / Windows Mobile 2003 and shouldn't be applied to Pocket PC 2002 Dell Axim's! |

I have a Dell Axim with windows mobile 2003. I have Tom Tom navigator 2ordered and it should be arriving in the next day or two. Because you have to activate the Tom Tom software, should I put off instaling it until I have had the Axim updated as the update might mean performing a hard reset.Any comments welcome |

The patch that Dell will be releasing will be a ROM update I believe, but this shouldn't affect the serial number that you have burned into your ROM, you should be okay to install it prior to the patch. Unfortunatly nobody knows the detail of the patch yet, whether it will wipe the Dell completely and you'll have to re-install the programs, or whether you can just run the patch over the top of what you have installed. |

Dell released the patch yesterday but quickly pulled the patch from their website after finding out that they were getting reports that Pocket PC 2002 users have discovered a way to hack into the fix and obtain an unlicensed upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003.
Dell said in a press statement "We are pulling the fix temporarily and will provide a more targeted distribution via of it to the customers who were truly affected by our Windows Mobile 2003 performance issue. As planned, we will begin proactively mailing a CD version of the fix beginning within two to three weeks."
It's a shame a few have to ruin it for the majority. So, hopefully Dell will start shipping CD's soon... |
