Have just purchased i3 from PCWorld.

Have also downloaded the 2v4 update and the "uploader" from Maplins site.

However, I can't do anything with them as the USB cable has a label on it saying..." Before connecting this cable, first install the software on the CD so that the necessary drivers will be available"... But there is NO CD in the box even though the box contents says "USB drivers included."

If I plug the cable in Windows (XP/SP2) says "New hardware found" and goes through the usual install procedure but ends up saying it can't install it.

Consequently I can't run the update because the i3 won't show in Explorer and the Updater is looking for a serial port or USB port - which is greyed out.

I'd have thought the standard Windows USB drivers should have worked!

Anybody else had this problem?

Can anybody email me the USB drivers or make any suggestions?

download mapsource from the garmin site, i'm nearly 100% sure this includes the usb driver ..install it and leave it .. you should be able to connect your i3 to the pc using the usb cable.then run the uploader software ....choose the usb connection (might have to click on auto detect)...then load the new firmware..

If that doesn't work, download the PoI Loader from Garmin, here

http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00434-00

and that will install everything you need. Then you can connect your unit and away you go....

Many thanks to everyone. Went to the Garmin site. Couldn't find USB drivers anywhere on the site. Then typed in "USB drivers" in the search box and lo and behold it found them!
Have installed the drivers, the Uploader and the 2.4 OS update and have now got it working.
Lovely bit of kit isn't it? First impressions are that I'm going to prefer the i3 to my TomTomGo Classic which I've had for a year now.
Also downloaded the Manual from Garmins' site which is a little bit more explicit than the multi-language booklet that came with the i3 but doesn't contain much more information.
For instance, I couldn't fathom out how to read the battery meter. Then I found out that if you pull out the power lead you get a warning telling you that power has been lost and to push the wheel to continue whereupon it switches over to battery power and displays the battery level in the top right of the screen. - No mention of this in the manual.
Two other queries someone might be able to help me with.
(1) The i3 still won't show up as a drive in Explorer. Surely, as a USB device it should do?
(2) The POI situation. I get the impression that if I install a POI it wipes out previously installed ones and that to avoid this one has to keep all required POI's in a single folder and download the lot everytime which seems a bit odd. Am I right or wrong on that?
I'm dying to download some POI's but am loathe to do so 'till I've done a backup of the existing setup, which I can't do because of (1) above.
Have just ordered a Transflash-SD adapter so I can backup the card that way.
Oh yes - one other thing - I'm using Duracell AA batteries at the moment but it doesn't say on the batteries what mAh rating they are. Does anybody know? Not that it matters too much as I'm going to buy some Sony 2400mAh rechargeables this morning.
Thanks again everyone - going to play with i3 some more now!

not neccesarily - i have a usb mouse and a usb keyboard which are usb devices but they don't show up as drives. i also have a 60gb creative mp3 player which is usb but does not show as a device. depends how the manufacturers set it up.

you're ALMOST right - when uploading poi's to the unit it only affects the custom poi's - you cannot edit/delete the pre-set ones.

apparently it doesn't work if you put the 'copied' transflash card back in...

as far as i know (and someone correct me if i'm wrong) the mAh (milli-amp hours) is only relevent to rechargeable batteries - i.e. it will "give out" (unsure of correct terminolgy) 2400 milli-amps per hour. i've never seen any mAh ratings for non-rechargeable batteries

hope that helps!

Thanks MaFt. That makes more sense. It was the pre-installed ones I was concerned about. Didn't want to lose them when creating new POI's.

So how can one do a backup? If I copy the original to a spare card it should copy everything including any identifying code/serial number/whatever . In the future when (God forbid) it should crash then copying my copy back onto the original should surely restore everything?

Seems like a case of contacting Garmin for an explanation!

no idea i'm afraid! just quoting what i'd heard someone mention here.

when playstations first came out the discs had a really simple copy-protection method - the discs were created with an error in them. the playstation looked for this error. if a disc was copied the software copying it would automatically fix this error but then it obviously wouldn't work cos the playstation didn't find it. it may be something similar to stop piracy with the cards...

like you say, check with garmin cos if we had a cd/dvd we could at least re-install the maps but with just the card if anything goes tits-up it's looking a bit scary...

When I couldn't find the USB drivers initially on the Garmin site I sent them an email requesting them. Just had a reply from them saying they've put me a CD in the post which includes the drivers.
Doesn't say what else is on it.
Will wait till it arrives and see - might be something on it for backing up?

Well, the CD arrived this morning (excellent service!) but it was just the USB drivers (version 4).
I have therefore sent them the following email. Will let you know their response when I get it.

Thank-you for the USB driver CD which arrived this morning. What excellent
service!
Have installed the drivers, the 2v4 update and the Uploader and now have my
i3 working.
First impressions are that I shall be using the i3 in preference to my
TomTomGo Classic which I have had for a year now!

However, I do have one big concern. - There appears to be no way to backup
the OS, which is very worrying.
I have tried copying the OS to a spare 256Mb Transflash card but when I
insert it I am asked to install the map data from the "enclosed CD", which I
cannot do as there were no CD's in the box (hence my request for the USB
drivers.)

Could you tell me -
(a) What would happen in the event of the system crashing (God forbid!) and
(b) if there is any way I can backup the sytem to use in the event of a
crash or
(c) if it possible to obtain a CD with the appropriate map data on it (UK
Ireland)?

TIA

They replied a few minutes later with the following:-

hello ken

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe Support.

(a) What would happen in the event of the system crashing (God forbid!)

A: if the system crashes you will need to contact Garmin about this. You can
not back up the os

(c) if it possible to obtain a CD with the appropriate map data on it (UK
Ireland)?

A: the mapping is only available with the i series on a memory card. This is
how the units are designed.

If you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us again.

So there we have it! - The OS cannot be backed up which is rather worrying. Though presumably it can be once one has bought the relevant maps at approx £70 (when they are released of course.)

At least I'm pleased with their support. They do respond promptly to emails which is more than TomTom have done over the last 12 months!!!
