I'm about to own (EBAY) an HP iPAQ 6315 and am hoping to use it for both aviation and marine navigation as well as more normal capabilities. HP has a GPS receiver ($349) and I see that there are a whole lot of other BT options. So many, in fact, that I'm about as confused as I can get.

Anyone got some guidance for me in selecting a receiver and software to pull this off? Long range navigation in both the Atlantic and Pacific, by the way.

Thanks,

Garry

Do you need to recodr your travels? In that case a Data Logger receiver would come in handy (like a DeLorme BlueLogger). Otherwise you will want to go for longer battery runtime. The GlobalSat BT-338 has 15 hrs of runtime, and a state of the art SiRF III receiver.

Not an expert on aviation software - sorry. For marine stuff you probably need to use Maptech, or Oziexplorer for your own maps.

No real need to record trips. I'm a flight test and ferry pilot in airliners and do sailboat deliveries in the Pacific from time to time. No record problem with the aviation, and I keep written journals on the sailing passages.

Thanks for the advice on hardware and sortware.

Garry,

Suggest you keep it simple:-

1_Buy or build a DIY battery pack for PDA and GPS receiver

2) get a basic Memory Map package

3) Use maps from Aeroplanner.com for world wide flight coverage at 1/1,000.000 scale, downloadable and low cost.

You now have a fairly universal topograhical, aeronautical and marine package but without 'Garmin' type aeronautical add-ons!!
