"Windows Mobile for Pocket PC 2003" - otherwise known as Pocket PC 2003 (to anyone who doesn't want to keep saying that mouthful!), launched this morning.

At the moment, information is very sketchy - many of the bits of even the Microsoft web site are not in place, but the home page for the overall launch is here and the press release about Pocket PC 2003 is here (note that the web site at PressPass linked from that is currently 404).

Many new devices have been officially launched today, including the new iPAQ range (look at HP's US web site - the UK one hasn't caught up yet).

Upgrades for existing devices - information is extremely sketchy about that at present. At this point, this post becomes rumour rather than hard fact.

There is a link on the HP US web site about the iPAQ Pocket PC 2003 upgrade program that is currently a dead link. I expect upgrades for at least the 3900 and 5400 series to be made available. It may well be that there's other upgrades produced; Compaq always had a very good reputation for producing upgrades for old devices and many are hoping HP will continue that.

Rumour in microsoft.public.pocketpc is that Dell will have an upgrade available for the Axim X5 before long. Indeed, one of the moderators of the Dell Forums has made reference to carrying out some tests with an Axim X5 running Pocket PC 2003.

I've heard neither rumour nor hard fact about any other Pocket PC manufacturers.

The likelihood is that that upgrade will be chargeable (as it involves a new licence from Microsoft) - somewhere in the region of US$30 per device seems likely. As with many Microsoft new releases, there may be a window in which purchasers of Pocket PCs recently may get a free upgrade.

As with all Pocket PC ROM upgrades, you have to get an upgrade from your Pocket PC manufacturer - you can't buy Pocket PC from Microsoft (as it lacks necessary drivers and customisations for your Pocket PC).

I expect more information will become available in the next few days. Meanwhile, I have heard it said (and the press releases tend to back this up), that Pocket PC 2003 is an evolution rather than a revolution.

To put the upgrade into context, there's some comments about Pocket PC 2003 in this review of the new iPAQ 2210/2215.

There clearly are some software compatibility issues right now - they're also mentioned in that article. New drivers are required for some hardware that may not yet be available (particularly wireless LAN cards - networking internals are different in Pocket PC 2003).

I intend to order an upgrade, if one is made available, for my iPAQ 3970 - at the very least it will be nice to have an up to date ROM with SD drivers that hopefully work at a reasonable speed with SD memory (there have been rumours of a new ROM with such a fix; I suspect it will be a Pocket PC 2003 ROM, rather than a Pocket PC 2002 ROM now, though HP may surprise me and release a new Pocket PC 2002 ROM!).

If I manage to get an upgrade, I will hold off on installing it, though - certainly until software compatibility is clear. I suspect it'll take a few weeks to get hold of an upgrade kit in the UK anyway; by then, most if not all of the necessary upgrades for my software and drivers should be available.

The HP Upgrade Button has just been changed to say that upgrades will be available for the 3800, 3900 and 5450 series. The link is still 404 - not found, though! You can see that button here, though bear in mind that UK users will almost certainly need to wait for HP (UK) to announce a UK upgrade program. That link also has details of the new iPAQs.

Good news for iPAQ 3800 users who want to upgrade, anyway (as it was unclear whether there would be an upgrade for them) - though it sounds as if 1910 users may be unlucky.
