Connecting GPS to GSM

I want to build my own tracker. I have searched the web and have found a couple of oem modules that would be suitable. The Trimble Lassen IQ (GPS) and the GM862 for the GSM. My question is - How do I connect these 2 devices together. Can they just be cabled together|? I am assuming they will need their own power supply. I have also looked at the Siemens T55 combined module which may solve this problem. Is it then just a case of connecting attenna and power and dialling into it using GPS Software?

that's a good start. After that you will need to write the control software that opens the GPS serial port for the mobile to read, procedures to read SMS and act upon them, timer procedures to send the current location in intervals as SMS or maybe even via GPRS. to save power you may want to think about SMS commands to switch the GPS part on and off programmatically.

Not sure if any of the modules you mentioned has an ASIC for that or if you need to add one by yourself. You could use one of the stamp size linux systems for that.
