Hello

As I mentioned in a post a week or two ago, I have been doing some GPS surveying work for the National Trust.

This is using THEIR equipment which comprises a DGPS Max back-pack receiver and an Ipaq with a PC card expansion jacket. The receiver is connected to the Ipaq using a Socket R-I/O serial card (PCMCIA) plugged into the card slot on the jacket.

I would quite like to use my own 3970 Ipaq along with me as a back-up and to experiment with OziEplorer which is loaded on my Ipaq.

The software does not recognise the reciever if I put my Ipaq into the jacket and plug the card in so I presume I must need to load some software and a driver. The Socket website refers to the CD supplied with the serial card which I don't posses.

So - two questions:

1. If I need some software to do this does anyone know of a website where it can be downloaded?

2. Or - is there a better way to connect it in the first place. i.e would one of the leads referred to by memory map or PC mobile allow the serial plug on the DGPS Max to plug directly into the Ipaq bottom port?

All a mystery to me I am afraid, so any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

Many thanks

Tim

I think you're really going to need to look at getting the drivers. If you have absolutely no way of getting hold of the CD, then try contacting Socket, the driver may be only a couple of meg which can be sent via email. I haven't seen the DGPS Max back-pack receiver, but it does sound like you'll need a driver for it.

CF serial card should be the last resort one would consider if your PPC has absolutely no serial capability through the bottom port. Yes you do need a driver/software for that.

To connect PPC to a serial GPS, see this post:

The simplest/easiest is to use a Serial Interface (same function as a CF serial card) which we produce for a number of PDA for less than $20 but unfortunately not for 38/39xx (we are considering it but not for the next few weeks).

Therefore you need a 2-3 connection set up in G9XPM + GQ38 (or GQ38P). It does give you flexibility in future expansion/upgrade though.
