I'm thinking of purchasing the Quest but have a few questions:

-in one of the posts someone stated that I could create a route with the MapSource software and download it to the Quest. When using one of these routes what happens if I deviate from the route. Say I make a right at an intersection instead of the left which the unit tells me. Does the unit try and recalculate and get me back on my intended route or does it just recalculate and attempt to get me to my final destination on the route?

-is the 115mb of internal memory enough for most people? I know most of the people here are in Europe but could I load say the entire maps for Michigan & Indiana into memory?

I used to have a Garmin iQue 3600 and really like hte way the Garmin software works and was quite impressed with Garmins customer service. Since then I've purchased a Dell X50V and have been trying different GPS software and have been nothing but disappointed.

When you calculate a route on the PC, it determines roughly the same route as the Quest would. If you go off the route, ie turn from a major road onto a minor road then it will recalculate the best route to your destination. Generally, this will involve getting back onto the main road you left.

However, if your deviation is substantial (ie, you miss your motorway turn off and the next one is 5 miles away) then you may get a completely new route.

If you generate a custom route on the PC with multiple waypoints that take you away from the normal direct route, then the Quest will try to get you back on route to the next waypoint in the route that you were heading for. (Within reason - if you completely bypass a waypoint and get back onto your original route then it stops trying to route you via the waypoint and goes onto the next one).

You can set route recalculation to Automatic, Prompted or Off. If you have it switched off then you can just look at the map on the screen and find your way back onto the route or manually tell the Quest to recalculate the route.

It's a long explanation and I think it's correct. In practice, it just works and you don't really think about what it's doing. 8)

No, you need 243Mb like us Europeans get. Sorry. We normally get the raw deal over here in Britain, so I couldn't resist. Wink

Sorry, but I don't know how big/small Michigan and Indiana are. For what it's worth, the entire maps of Great Britain (pop ~60 Million) require about 150 Meg. All of London (pop ~10 million) is about 15 Meg.

Garmins have a "basemap" which has a rough map of major roads (not very accurate) that you can use if you don't have the maps loaded for a particular area.

Thanks for the detailed response. I kind of figured that's how the recalculating worked but wanted to verify. After looking at a few other sites last night I'm pretty sure the 115mb will be enough memory for what I"m looking for.
