Has anyone sussed the file format of the built in POI on the Medion 95900?

Mine has a /medion/POI directory where ALDI have added the locations of loads of ALDI stores. There are six files with the following extensions:

.cat, .dat, .lvl, .mpl, .nam, .rid

I've had a quick look at them but not quite seen the pattern yet. Does anyone have the file specification?

All poi's apart from the Aldi ones are built into the map data.

Exactly.

So surely we can add our own POIs in the same way the ALDI ones have been added. The main ones are built into the map data but these are additional personal POIs.

It's just a question of understanding the data format.

If I were you I would ditch the onboard POI's and get POIWarner then you can choose what you want on there not some Aldi store plying for business and the only cost is the program (£18) and you then join POIHandler for free and choose what you want from there, the speed cams are not free though (£8 per year) but they do cover nearly everywhere.

That in MHO anyway, it works for me and others, I have shut the POI's on the map off and can choose hundreds of POI's from Burgerkings to Stripjoints (Not that I use them of course!)

Cheers

Why not use the Safety Camera files from this web site which are FREE.

Sorry just seen your post at the bottom Pocketgps on how to do it, I must be going blind! 8O

I have to say I do find it easy using the POIWarner program but if people would like to use the Pocket GPS World speed cams database then thats up to them to choose all the options available and I think you are doing a great service in giving that choice.

But In my experience and as I see how easy it is to use the POIWarner program and that speed cam database that you can use from POIHandler, then that does make up my mind for me especially for others who may not have any computer knowledge at all.

Luckily Iam ok in this area and pick things up fast, but as I see from some other posts, some are not so quick to understand how to do thhese things and it would possibly become impossible for them to understand how to do it even if shown Confused so the easier option will always win out even if it does cost slightly more.

A suggestion if you dont mind me saying Smile maybe you could convert your datasbase files to the different format/s already so that people can just put them into the folders directly without going through all the conversion routine or is this difficult to do as there are so many differing units around?

As I have paid myself for the subcription (Maybe foolishly) then I feel like I should use the facility to the fullest :D

Regards

Hello tel33

The Safety Camera files are complied by others at Pocket GPS World and there are already many different file formats, this has been discussed many times but as they are free and the person concerned does this as a free service then I think that we are very lucky to have them at all, they contain over 6,400 different Safety Camera locations and updated at the end of each month.

As you said above there are just so many differing units with lots of file types and people seem to add there own bits to them, so more file types just complicates the issue further.

Hi there Pocketgps

Yes I totally agree and would never say otherwise that the files are free and that the person who does it is doing us all a great service.

I hope that many use his/hers Laughing (Cant be sexist!) files as I would have had I known earlier on how to do it, but sadly I needed a solution quickly as sadly I had great trouble finding out how to do the conversions etc on here and POIWarner/POIHandler came along to save my dayat my time of crisis, I also have to say it works very well indeed too.

Now my knowledge has vastly improved I can use the files from this site if I wish, but as I have paid Crying or Very sad for then I will continue using them until the subscrition is up, also if I do use the PocketGPS World files things might start getting complicated if I also download POIHandlers files aswell so I will stick to just the one at the moment, obviously the one I paid for.

Its a shame that all the GPS manufactures do not use the same format on their files but alas in this world of competition this wont happen.

Still keep up the good work whoever does it, I am sure many on here will get free speed cams for all time :D

Cheers
