just saw this http://www.aanavigator.com/shop/product.asp?id=29
was wondering if anyone here has it/ uses it , would be ideal as it's a single unit, dont even need to have a cigarette lighter socket either from what I can see as the power would be from the pcs battery ?
also says it has 'auto rerouting', so would be good for avoiding height and weight restrictions ? I've just started a new driving job and on the induction day I heard them talking about a product 'bridge aware' or something similair, dont know if this is to do with the 1472 bridges thread or if there is acrually a company selling a bridge alert product

just saw the advert for this when I was looking at the AA site...really don't know much about sat nav but from what I can find out this is the only 'all in one' unit available (all other options are seperate pcs/reciever)

and loads of info etc, anyway, if anyone would like to recommend one for an hgv driver any info would be appreciated, thanks,

it aa navigator on a mio 168 pocketpc the program is ok but the map seems slow and its not as slick as tomtom the new tomtom navigaotr v5 looks ok though i have version 3 and would recomend it the thing you need to ask is do you want it to do more than just navigation

an all in one or pnd ( personal navigation device) will do navigation only and you stuck with the software if you dont like it you wont be able to change it

with a pocket pc you have a choice of software if you dont like one you can change the software and maps for something else you also get the usual pocketpc stuff such as email pocker word pocket excel etc also the choice of gps receivers get bigger as you could have bluetooth compact flash sdgps wired gps (plugs in the bottom of the pocket pc) theres the mio series that have a built in gps but have no bluetooth also youll need a storeage card either sd or compact flash

hope that helps a little

ahh I'm understanding a bit better now
how compact or cumbersome is a pocket pc with the gps antenna, or are there any that have them built in like the aa one ?
not sure if I want a pocket pc or an all in one thing, a lot would depend on cost, I would pay around the 300 mark for the equiptment but 500+ is pushing it really

the best thing to do is go to halfords or maplins as they usually stock the navman pin or the garmin nersion wich is very close to the mio in aa advert this will give you a good idea of what your looking at or for .
just as a side thought i dont tomtom will work with the mio 168 if you were looking at that option but i could be wrong on that one

I have AA naviagtion on a PDA. The software does not seem as slick as some software.

The good thing is that it works, does not crash the system and gets me there. It Intergrates with AA Speedcare for avoiding those nasty cameras !

Bad things maybe ?

I cannot add pushpins or my own POIs (Points of Interest) ( or pushpins of low bridges, National Trust properties etc !)

I cannot plan a route using waypoints ( to avoid areas I know are bad)

Like MOTs, Accept that maps are out date as soon as you buy them, electronic data even more so.

I don't know of a system that allows electronic downloads on map information.

My advice , echoed elsewhere, draw up a short list of what you want, what people like and dislike and see if it suits you. GPS is the "In thing" to have now, this means that prices and functionality will fall to chase the market, and what is the best deal will be out of date in a months time !
