Are there GPS applications for PDA smartphones that interact with the Net? Such as finding an ATM or whatever based on current location. But instead of having a DB of ATMs installed on the PDA, it queries it from the Internet (such as on a Treo 650).

Are these apps starting to appear? If not, it has huge potential.

Are there any examples out there? A simple example would be to determine location, translate to zipcode, launch web browser and goto weather.com using zipcode.

Any kind of integrated GPS/Internet/PDA apps like this going on? I'd be surprised if not.

Technically, you shouldn't even need a GPS because your phone can determine it's (rough) position from the base station locations.

There is certainly a lot of talk about this - "Location based services" is the buzz word for it - but I don't know of any applications which do it yet.

The API's for LBS haven't been released yet from what I understand. But it can be developed now with GPS until LBS is fully deployed. Surprised it's not being done... and with huge momentum. The application potential is enormous.

There sure are some out there.

One such that is widely available is CoPilot. You must have missed the posting about the tracking of the Gumball Rally. CoPilot have set up over 100 units and they are reporting their locations back to a tracking site on the internet.

click here for the CoPilot tracking page.

Orange offer this sort of facility e.g. nearest Cash Machine. However, the

is VERY rough - 8 to 10 miles out Exclamation If you enter your correct postcode, it does find the nearest locations.
