Speed cams & new maps

Hey everyone,

With the imminent release of a new map upon us.
I was wondering what effect this will have on me with regard to the speed cams files.
I understand i will need to copy them into the new map folder but what about the custom warnings i use with the cams?
Do i have to hope that these transfer with the map config file?

The custom warnings are saved in the mapsettings.cfg file. Whilst you can copy this between devices using the same map version it is not advised to do so between devices or maps of differing versions.

You can of course try, but be sure to save a copy of the original mapsettings.cfg file from your new map first. If it works, great, if it doesn't then you will have to re-configure the alerts.

The usual sign of the old MapSettings.cfg not working with a new map are often constant re-boots when you power up the device, if it does this delete the file and configure your warnings again, if it works its saved you five minutes - Mike

In which case yes that is an issue, all you can do is try it as suggested. If it doesn't work then you will have to re-enter your warnings or consider using built-in or real voice alerts.

You could record your own real voice warning and use that?

I just rename the camera files from this site to names like "20 mph mobile camera.ov2" and set TT "Warn When Near POI" to "Brief Spoken Warning" and it says "20 miles per hour mobile camera 200 yards", no having to type out the words.

Don't use the long spoken warning or it will also tell you the distance to the next POI in the same category.

Use a 3,5MM to 3,5MM stereo lead to connect the line out socket on the omTom to the sound line input on the PC, then use Audacity to record each of the audio files, you need to save them as OOG Vorbis and make sure the file name matches the coresponding speed camera POI file name.
Once you have a full set you will be able to set up the speed zoned database in under 5 minutes (with a little practice) - Mike

MrT, yes i have tried it that way, but i didn't like the having to rename the files. I even suggested they were distributed that way so everyone could do that. This was denied as they want the name in there for piracy reasons.

OK Mike, you win, yes it would be 5 mins once you have the ogg files, but what about the hour or so to do the other work? Also at this stage i don't have a 3.5 lead. But i will consider this for future upgrades, thanks.

Renaming the files is easy, just extract them to a folder and run a batch file. If you are not sure on how to do this, open notepad, copy the bold lines below into it then save the file as "rename.bat" into the folder with the camera files and run it each time you download the latest camera set. As long as you are entitled to use the camera files and do not copy them to anyone else , I cannot see any copyright problems with this.

If you use the X2 icons you can do the same here, but save it as a different filename eg "X2.bat" although it is only the OV2 files you need to update each month.

That "brief spoken warning" is a nice method, Mr T.
In fact I used it for a while but never got round to finding out how to write the batch file!
I only stopped because I wanted a spoken warning AND a sound effect siren at the front, so now I use ogg files directly stored in the sounds folder (as in this topic) with simple names putting the speed limit FIRST

Shame, I could leave them as the default PGPSW names if the names could be juggled so the PGPSW was at the END of the name rather than the beginning (as the y already are for othe POIs from this site. But I was told it would be too much work to change the ov2 file to match so it still worked for people adding the voice alerts by the old "matching names" method.

Now you've done such a good description of your method, MrT, I thought I might do another write up describing all four(?) methods of getting spoken speed limit /camera warnings in one place. May I use your text? (with ample credit, of course!)

Just wanted to come back to this and say that the mapconfig transferred over with only a little glitch with the reboot until i ran "operate my go" then it booted fine.

MrT, thanks for your input on the batch file info.
I would like to take more time with this in the future and write my own text for future updates.
Would you mind if i pick your brains on the rules for using the ren command?
