My new IPAQ 2210 and Tom Tom 2

Hi. Sorry to ask such a simple question, but your help would be much appreciated. I've recently bought a IPAQ 2210 with Tom Tom 2. I want to know what size of SD card I should use to store my maps on? I was told I needed a 128MB card - will this allow for complete storage or just for sections?

Uk mainland is 92 Mb or just South is 62 Mb. It depends what else you want to do? Other progs or mp3s? 128 is ok and maybe the cheapest way is use a 128 SD for maps etc and also use a CF card for other stuff which is about half the price per Mb.
I use it that way with the SD for static permanent stuff like TT and CF for things to swap around from PC or camera or extra maps and mp3s.

OK thanks. I've also learned by looking thorugh the posts that I should install the software to my ipaq and not to the memory card - hopefully that's fairly somple to do!

It's simple to do. When it says 'install to default location?" just say no and specify your preferred location but the ipaq should be default anyway. I used to install everything to card and it worked fine with a cable gps but I've had freeze problems with bluetooth and it seems happier with TT2 installed to ipaq and only the maps on cards - SD or CF. Once TT is installed it doesn't seem to care where the maps are. It finds them anyway. Though its probably not a good idea to put them in long paths in subfolders, just put the map folder into the root of the card.

Cheers lostnfound. It sounds easy enough. Only problem is I was intending to use my Sandisk 128mb SD card which I use with my digital camera without any issues, but people here have been having problems with that card. Need to get myself a new one. Any recommendations?

I'd wait and see if you get any problems first. You may find it works fine for you. If you need a different one, the talk lately is the Panasonic cards. 85 quid from Argos for a 256 (so only 35 more than the 128) but you might find them cheaper elsewhere. They'll be more expensive than most alternatives because they are quicker cards, so worth the premium.

Recently bought a 256MB card from expansys.com for <£50. In process of porting data over so will let you know how well the card performs once I've had a chance to try it.

Don't be shy. The TomTom program can be easily run from storage card. The only thing that refuses to do so is the TomTom GPS driver.

Startup items like Wisbar can be installed into the iPAQ File Store. For whatever reason that one is immediately available at reboot time (unlike the storage card, as was correctly metioned before)

I would still say this is mostly a question of decent card management. I am running TomTom 2 from storage card since more than a year, with all kinds of BT devices, without any major issues. The definite advantage is that you have much more RAM available for the program to run.

I have just installed TTN2 on my new 2210 and have tried running the maps from my old CF128 card and an SD128 card.

The SD card was 8 seconds faster than the CF in planning a journey of 160 miles, and took 40 seconds

I will be buying a 256SD card now as 128 is not big enough to hold more programs.

The same journey on my old Ipaq 3660 took 1m 10 seconds, so the Ipaq 2210 is much faster, and I am very happy.
