Today NavMan announced a new Navigation system: the PiN570. Hopefully we will get a peek at it and a chance to play with it this afternoon when we meet with them at CeBIT.

The NavMan PiN570 is a PDA based navigation system that not only runs the latest version of the SmartST software, but also has full PocketPC functionality as well. Better yet the PiN570 comes with all the navigation software pre-installed so all you need to do is to switch on and off you go.

Looks like a clone of the Acer N35 ? Hope it's got better battery life and that there is an "action" button on the joystick, the N35 is lacking in both these areas unfortuntaly :-(

I have an ipaq 3970 with pocket PC and have to use ActiveSync to my PC.
the PiN570 only mentions a USB cable in the bumf - or does it come with a proper synch software like ActiveSynch?

I'd like to ditch the ipaq if possible and just use the Navman - is this possible?

So how is this any better than the PIN300? Is it just the PDA thats different because the spec doesn't look that brilliant - bluetooth? Wi-Fi?. Also is the GPS integrated or is it Compact Flash?

First impressions? I'm not convinced! Or maybe I'm missing something...

Well since they announce full PocketPC functionality it should be compatible with ActiveSync yes, if it's like the N35 it has a proprietary plug.

That's because *I* haven't seen it yet and we don't have a preview sample.

Darren, Mike and Lutz may be able to chip in with their opinions, but from what I understand it's not so disimilar to the PiN 100/300 but using an SDIO GPS.

The primary difference with the 570 is that it has SmartST loaded into ROM so it shares the benefits of a PNA device, i.e. it will survive a hard reset and has the additional PocketPC functionality.

We saw the demo unit but given the above there is little else to say about it.

So all in all you would recommend it over my ipaq 3879 + navman sleeve?

I'll ber quite honest, I dislike SmartST, never got on with it but if you already use Navman SmartST and need PDA functionality then the 570 is a great solution with a sensitive receiver.

Is it me or does anyone else find the Navman site extremely difficult to navigate!!! And then when you find what you're looking for you cant understand it! For a start it doesn't say that the GPS in this system is SDIO. Then it says the maps are loaded onto an SD card (doesn't mention anything about them loaded on the ROM). Whats the point of that - are there two SD slots? I doubt it. Its left me totally confused (admitedly not a difficult thing to do).

One question for you guys that have seen it - is the GPS software new (ie new maps etc) or is it the same as the PiN300?
