As many of you who own Road Angel GPS Speed Camera Detectors know, you'll have an output port on the rear of the unit allowing you to export GPS data. I have had a Road Angel for well over a year now, but thought it was about time we reviewed one of the Road Angel power/serial cables from Holux which allows you to export the GPS data to a Pocket PC saving on the cost of having to purchase a GPS Receiver just for navigation.

So here it is! The full review is available here.

You will be able to navigate with 99% of applications but there maybe the odd application that requires the GPGSV signal to check that you are receiving a valid GPS signal. One application I did have problems with was CoPilot Live.

I believe SmartST 1.96 is another such application.

I have two of these cables, one in the car and one on my motorbike and they work very well. The only comment I have is that the serial port plug is not robust enough. I remove the Road Angel from my car every day and from the motorbike every time I leave it (to prevent theft and for weekly updates) and the plastic cover over the metal connector pulls off and then the wires inside break off. I have had to resolder the wires back on a couple of times....

Mike.

This is all fine if you have the serial version, like I did until the radar alert socket fell apart. Got it replaced, but with a USB version....So has anyone got this to work as a GPS unit on a laptop, or anything else for that matter. Sad

Hi Stuart,
We do supply RA cables for the USB Road Angel devices.
Give the shop a call and ask for Tes.
She'll be able to advise you.
Regards,
Julie

I've had two of these and both have suffered from poor soldering.
The winding which reduces the voltage for the Ipaq charging breaks free after just over 12 months of use.

A quick five minutes with the soldering iron fixes the problem but feel the lack of quality when viewing the soldering on the board.
