The Cat & Fiddle road between Buxton and Macclesfield is to get Specs cameras by the end of March.

I don't claim to know the detailed reasons but SPECS 2 was only Type Approved for forward facing deployments.

SPECS 3 is approved for front and rear facing and can be used in either mode or indeed both. Most new deployments are SPECS 3 and so it is possible for the Cat & Fiddle SPECS to be either rear facing or a mixture to cover all eventualities.

Thanks Darren - I didn't know Specs 3 were both ways, sorry.

Is there a visible difference, or will we just see them mounted back to front?

The middle Specs in use here on M4 near Bristol have a couple of cameras facing each way on one of the poles. I assumed it was in readiness for contraflow.

But they will be so easy to defeat.

I have seen bags on a rear pannier 'accidentally' hanging over the number plate. And a pillion passenger only has to put their hand over the plate as they pass the camera.

SPECS to read those tiny numberplates that the bad boys have on their bikes? FAIL again Laughing

They can't be that dumb, they must be putting in rear facing ones. Alternatively, maybe they want to slow all the cars down so the bikes can use them as a slalom course? Result!

Oh well, it looks like bikers will just have to go somewhere else and kill themselves.

Just to resurrect this topic: anyone who travels the Cat & Fiddle knows that if you take the rat run between the cameras you'll travel an unrestricted road (so 60 mph), travel a shorter distance and negate most of what the SPECS is meant to do! Doh! Case dismissed!

I'd also add, as a car driver, that I rarely see bikers being idiots. Now car drivers, that's a different story (my OH got overtaken one night and the car went straight on at the corner, through the fence and down into the field!) Rolling Eyes
