Car GPS Navigation Systems or Global Positioning System was first implemented in the year 1978 by the United States Department of Defense. GPS receivers obtain information from 4 different satellites and make use of it to compute its own location by comparing its own time with the given time of the satellites. The differentiation between the two times, disclose the space taken by the receiver from the satellites. Due to the checking of time against three satellites, a receiver can locate longitude, latitude and altitude or the positioning system on earth. The automated routing system provides addresses or waypoints and the GPS unit will calculate a direction for you and assist by giving instructions.

I have hesitated from offering an explanation because I'm unsure of what you are seeking. It rather reminds me of the old joke where little Johnny arrives home from school and asks his mother where he came from.
