Very sorry to hear about your break-in.
Thanks for posting it though as thanks to other posts like yours I now remove the mount AND clean the screen to remove the sucker mark. Your bad experience is a warning to all.
The TTG has to be high in the list of "most stealable" car items these days. I remember when it was car stereos but thankfully thanks to clever radio designs those days are almost gone (I hope).
I would be in favour of hand amputation as a penalty for theft or if not how about just breaking of the fingers with a ball pein hammer
Hope your cra gets repaired OK and insurance ppays up for the TTG.

No a Sat Nav recieves signals it doesent send anything out.
It would be like trying to trace a stolen radio and hopeing they could find it just because it was switced on and tuned in. |

all this violence - I would merely release them in some wild area and tell them to get home which would redeem them - the Wild area, middle if Arctic in winter and only the clothes they were arrested in ;) _________________ J. |

5 hours battery life and thousand of miles of ice in the dark to nearest road - walking with inappropriate clothing - I think not _________________ J. |

if by chance they ever update it etc or buy new maps, maybe innocently if its sold on to an unsuspecting party, when you go to the tomtom site and enter the device code would it not be able to be traced by the ip address of the person updating it (just a thought ) |

With regard to theft of Tom Tom's
Sadly no matter what anti theft facilities you build into the TTG itself it would probably still be pinched..... shiny objects and Magpies comes to mind
I do believe Tom Tom could have done more though. A simple PIN code routine running in firmware (BIOS password in PC speak) would have been better than nothing.
A very robust password entry would use something like the "Dallas" series of Button ID tags that you find on some high security IT systems. You just touch your button tag onto a reader recepticle and it's fully automatic. It's a pretty simple piece of additional electronics (Maplin used to sell a kit !) but it would add to th cost of production.
Word would eventually get round the crim fraternity that the TTG's had "summin in em to stops em workin....grunt". Car radios are pretty well protected these days... my Audi Concert "Marries" itself to my cars central computer via a CAN bus network 8O Your Sky viewing card "Marries" itself to your Sky box.... there's a lot of it going on these days.
I was very surprised Tom Tom didn't introduce any anti theft systems on it's new TTG series, One or "Rider". They must know that the TTG series are highly desirable items = demand = thieves = theft = damage = tears
I think the Police would be most unimpressed....TTG's could start a resurgence in car break-ins which is not good for crime figures.
All my humble opinion of course :D |

It is beyond the bounds of possibility that a simple PIN routine could be included as part of an upgrade download from Tom Tom or am I just showing my ignorance of all things electronic. Anything would help.
Like the rest of you I now have to make a judgement on whether to take the TT or not, simply on security grounds, and I've taken to trying to rub off the sucker imprint on the screen.
( You're paranoid..anyone will tell you) 8O

Don't go through the hassle of removing the mount evertime I leave the car, although do remove the TTG. Maybe tomtom or someone could provide a sticker to go near the mount which says someting along the lines of "If you can't see it, it's not in the car"

Mount the unit on the dash in a place that doesn't screem "i'm a sat nav".
I've had my snopper next to the gear stick for ages and the SAT nav is replacing it soon. In the mean time my stickers are being printed in the next 5 mins.
"SAT NAV NOT LEFT IN VEHICLE, EVER!" |
