just printed out some lables and they can be put inbetween the clear rubber sucker bit and the black plastic mount. This means they can be read from outside the car if someone looks at the mount. It stands out and is clearly readable. Good job the sucker is clear. Also means that the sticker won't get damp with a fogged windsreen.

However i'm still moving mine to a low down position and i'll still remove it when i'm not in the car.

Most of them are too dumb to know that the unit can be anywhere but in the window. Plus i live in the civilised north where car crime is lower than the smoke down south.........we're too stupid to have real crime up here.

Did they make a video with a ferret and a flat cap?

So, just as car crime was dropping due to the fact that newer vehicles have 'dedicated' stereos which are not nearly as saleable as the old style units that could be used in any vehicle, it is now soaring again as the thieves target Sat Nav units, which are 100% saleable due to the fact that there isn't even the most basic security built-in.

It took years to make stereo/car manufacturers do anything - mainly because every time a car was broken into it brought more income for them - and I have no doubt that the SatNav manufacturers realise the same thing apllies to them - every one that gets nicked means they sell another one, and they don't care whether you or an insurance company pay.It's not just the loss of the unit either, it's the aggro of getting the damage to the car repaired, and the ongoing cost of a lost no-claim bonus (I remember when the no-claim bonus system was only affected by a your-fault driving claim ...!)

How hard would it be for some kind of security to be built in so that the units could not be used when they are stolen? - Not very I'm sure - but it won't happen until the first manufacturer does it and it is seen as a strong selling point. Then they'll all do it quick as a flash. In the meantime we need some enterprising bod to come up with some third-party software... designed so that even if the unit is re-formatted it can't be used. Even a simple password system would be a start.
I know it wouldn't stop theft completely - but the bandits wouldn't be so keen if they found that the units they had gone to the trouble of stealing were useless to them.

In the meantime take it all out of the car - and don't forget to wipe the screen to remove the mark the sucker leaves, as was so sensibly mentioned by a previous poster in this thread.

And as for the sticker saying there's nothing in the car ... well I find this naive in the extreme - it amounts to a challenge to the would-be thief to play Call My Bluff

It is a very sad world that we live in.

I heard an announcement on the news in my area (Anglia) from the Police, asking users of Nav units to please remove them and the mounts from sight as they are now the latest "must have" theft item.

The Police unsolved crime figures for car contents theft must be worrying them ! It doesn't look god on their regional crime figures.

I have always removed the TTG and mount, cleaned the window and put the tTG into a camera case that I then carry with me. It's a pain but so is replacing a broken window, jemmied boot or glove box!

I am astounded at the number of cars I have seen in open car parks with TTG's MIO's and such like in plain site screaming "nick me" to every low life thief that should pass by.

"When I was young you could leave your front door open and no one would take advantage...not any more".... I'm fibbing I'm only 38 and thas has not been the case in my lifetime....it was my grandparents who said it so "those were the good old days" ?

No idea why we can't be trusted to edit our own posts (like you can on every other forum I know).

They aren't averse to editing them themselves these days though!
