|
|
I recently bought a Mio 168 PDA for navigating in the car. I'm well pleased with it, the only problem is that even at full volume it is difficult to hear when travelling at speed.
I know you can get windscreen mounts wih amplifier and speaker built in, but what I would like to do is feed the audio from the gps into the radio (standard Ford Focus 5000 radio) so that it interrupts the radio.
Is there any way of doing this, or am I onto a loser?
Cheers,
Chris |

You can get a simple FM transmitter (cost £2,50 off e-bay) that will do the job, but it won't mute the radio the same as traffic alerts do, its just on all the time - I use one occasionally - for music I load up some mp3 stuff on a 1GB card put that in the ipaq and let the PDA play music and nav at the same time all through the speaker system on the Volvo - mike |

Use of those transmitters is illegal in UK

I bought a cheep mobile hands free kit £4.99 form a petrol station, it plugs into the cigarette lighter socket and has a speaker with volume control, the microphone has a grip clip with a small round suction type pad which you can position over the speaker on you PDA.
It amplifies the voice messages very well the only other thing you may need to purchase is a doubler for the cigarette lighter socket if you PDA needs to plug in, Maplins have these and some petrol stations.
Good luck

It's not always obvious, but many of these 'cheap' units (I've fitted several for relatives and friends) already have a socket on them (often covered by a cap), although it is often at 90 degrees to the dashboard socket, and might mean that anything plugged into it may be vulnerable to being knocked by yourself or your front seat passenger, depending on where exactly the dashboard socket is. _________________ Getting older and more senile by the minute !

Search e-bay for an iPod transmitter - there's loads!
The i-Rock is pretty expensive but has a short lead and runs on 2 x AAA batteries. with 4 frequencies.
Others run straight from the cigar lighter socket. with perhaps a single frequency. you'll buy these for 99 pence plus 6 quid postage !!
Batteries are a bit of a pain as they need replacing.
Ideally a cigar socket driven device is best - but try to get one with 4 frequencies so that you can select a frequency not affected by a local station.
Just plug the transmitter in the audio output socket and tune you radio in. You'll get good quality audio output.
I don't know of one that interrupts the radio output.........

You could get one of These
As it will also mute the radio, and if you have a radio that has the facility to increase the volume in relation to your speed you have the best of both.
Been using one for 6 months now. _________________ Graham.

Thanks Graham (and everyone else for replying) - that is exactly what I was looking for. Where did you get yours from - I get the impression that Nemesis are trade only and a quick google hasn't come up with anything?
Cheers,

Being lazy I gave the details of the review to my local Audio installer and got them to obtain and install it. Total cost £49.56. It is all completely hidden and wired into the in car radio which is a CDR 500. _________________ Graham.

The Qubit is not the only solution - do a general google for telemute leads - these are what they're called.
Supprisingly, no one (that I've found) has yet made a Bluetooth one for an even cleaner install. _________________ --

Thanks Graham,
Being even lazier who did you use? I'm just up the road from you in Portsmouth and could do with a recommendation for an audio installer.
