As far as I know, Waze uses its own data from all of its users constantly feeding back information. Waze is very good at knowing the road speeds and junctions/signal locations, so when a user is traveling below the speed for that stretch of road, it gets noticed. When several users are traveling below the road speed it appears as a hold up and users not yet in the hold up get redirected. If you are travelling below the expected speed, a page flashes up on the screen requestin that you to report the reason .
I think that it is absolutely brilliant and dont use anything else.
EDIT - when you stop at or near a petrol station, it recognises it and prompts you to enter the fuel prices _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I wish they would make a pnd with Waze as the operating system. I used it on my phone for a few thousand miles, but even with the charger plugged in, by the time I get from Sandy to Leeds (approx 150 miles), my full battery is below 50% _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe

I don't use my car much so I haven't had the chance to check the DS61 yet ....
On my 2599 and 2699, the right side traffic banner used to get a spinning wheel, briefly, as it received and reloaded the traffic data, usually every minute, as advertised.
When I was having bad reception issues the unit would show no traffic problems ahead, with the green tick and I wasn't getting the spinning wheel.
You need to be quick to notice the wheel as it's only very briefly displayed, often less than a second. _________________ Satnav:

I've never noticed the spinning wheel. That said, the side, even when I manually select the traffic banner to show all the time, it disappears after a certain amount of time travelling with no reported instances. Stuck in unreported traffic M1(S) at MK again today Broken down vehicle today and not an accident like yesterday.
Off to Scunthorpe tomorrow, so a chance to see what my reception is like up there!! _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe

My traffic banner has never disappeared !
I wonder if that's a side effect of not being updated, sort of like when your PC screen shuts down or the screensaver cuts in after a period of perceived inactivity ? _________________ Satnav:

There isn't a I don't know smiley
It's possible I suppose, but I don't know why it wouldn't be updating? As I say, every time I have looked at the traffic signal recently it has been showing full service. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe

I'll have a read of that ta.
It must be doing something though as the notification screen shows a grey road for x miles when in the roadworks section of M1 & M6. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe

So i've been able to sit out in the van now the temperatures have dropped!!
Turn on and view map. Obviously, no traffic reported. Plot route for tomorrow, circle for a few seconds, traffic delay 15 mins 4 miles away. So far so good. Watch the screen for 5 minutes, no spinning circle during that time. Switch to the traffic menu to see 5 greens and Traffic up to date. Bars don't drop for 5 minutes. Lose patience and turn off the traffic, then turn it back on. Still all greens, but Receiving traffic in the task bar. Go back to map screen, notifications showing as no delays reported! Gone from 15 minutes to 0 in 5 minutes? Not at that particular black spot! Go to traffic providers and clear list and auto search. 3 minutes later no providers filling the screen. Fully turn off unit and restart. 5 bars and receiving traffic almost immediately. Within 30 seconds, traffic up to date displayed. Map screen still shows no delays at black cat.
The digital channel page shows no work in this area.
Ho hum. Not sure how to get to the screens shown in the other thread. I will drive most of the way to Scunny tomorrow with the traffic screen on to see if my bars change at all. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe

Without having another unit to compare I don't think you can do any more but monitor it.
When M8 sees this he may remember how we got to the dashboard, but if you are getting something then I would expect the dashboard to be all green. _________________ Satnav:

Found out how to get to the other screen (from a previous thread of mine where the EPE was described). Will have a look tomorrow to see what is/ isn't occurring. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe

Okay, so after todays jaunt, there is definitely something wrong somewhere. I ran the dashboard and got Run, DAB & TPEG on green within 30 seconds, so far so good. From Sandy to Buckden solid greens. Got a bit flaky on/ off from Buckden to Peterborough. Peterborough to Stamford South (just after RAF Wittering) 3 greens. From Stamford South to South Witham, all reds. South Witham to RAF Cranwell turn all green. Cranwell turn to M18 all reds (apart from a quick minute of greens at Grantham and Worksop). Coming off M18 into Scunthorpe it fired into life again.
Coming home, all greens until past the steelworks then red, all the way to Grantham when there was a little blip. Around Peterborough (A47 junction) the greens appeared but were on and off all the way back to Sandy. At Alconbury the greens were on almost all the way back.
I noticed the RDS stayed greyed out most of the time, but I did sometimes see the unit scanning, although not connecting. The lights weren't red all the time, sometimes yellow, sometimes greyed out. When scanning, it sometimes came up as "Country Setup"
Obviously while driving and with the dashboard screen up, I can't see if the unit is reporting bars or if the notifications are shoring up to date.
Wondering why the RDS doesn't connect? What is the point of having it as a backup? _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe
