I realise this might be a little left field but I have just had a week's experience driving around Sicily using a Nuvi 2599 device, I would just wish to impart that many of the posted speed limits on the device differ from those actually permanently posted on the roads and you then suddenly come across speed cameras in unlikely places.
My hire car had a function that displayed the correct limits on the dashboard. It seemed that limits were knocked back from 130 or 110 kph to 80, especially on bridges, Many bridges were having their expansion joints worked on (I suppose as a consequence of the bridge collapse on the mainland last year).
I also received one verbal traffic notification in English which surprised me.
Finally, if anyone is doing the tour and lands in Palermo, grab a taxi, do the city, drive back to the airport then get your car. Driving standards on the island are generally poor (aggressive) but it is positively suicidal in town, and watch out for the scooters and bikes, they can damage your vehicle, as they did mine.

I guess the speed limit reductions are related to the road works
I agree about Palermo. It's a nightmare to drive into. Parking is next to impossible and lane markings non-existent. I think it's the 5th largest city in Italy which is somewhat unexpected not being on the mainland.
