Can anybody with a TomTom BT GPSR (Leadtek 9821x) tell me if it's possible to charge the unit without the docking station i.e. is there a power socket on the unit itself. I hate docking stations and cradles, they just add unnecessary baggage when travelling.

If you think about it - how does the receiver connect to the docking station? So, the answer is yes.

From the picture in the review there are 4 pins connecting the docking station to the receiver but I can't see any standard power socket on the receiver itself.

fair enough. But since TomTom are now selling the receiver without the docking station (due to lack of demand, haha), the answer still is yes.

To be more specific,

The 2 pin square socket on the cradle is for 12V hard wiring to the car.
The round socket on the cradle and GPS receiver is for the 5v charger cable.

And yes, you can get a car charger / AC charger for the 5v socket.

Regards
Bruce

The TomTom BT GPS I bought came with a wire that has an RJ11 plug on one end and a round plug on the other that plugs into the round hole on the BT GPS unit.

The RJ11 plug fits into any of the "Y" power cables that TomTom or others (such as TDC) sell to power a PDA and a wired GPS unit.
