Meet the Vitronic Enforcement Trailer, a new deployable speed camera that can be set up on site in 30mins and has enough on-board power to run for five days.

Equipped with armour plating, it has a wireless link to upload photos and can be towed to any location and once positioned its wheels retract to prevent vandalism or theft. The unit is able to police fixed and variable speed limits and can monitor four active traffic lanes at once.

Manufactured in Germany, the company has already won an order for 250 units from the French government. How long before we see these over here I wonder?

That's like throwing down the gauntlet to some people and inviting them to try and damage or remove it. If the camera is supposed to be vandal proof then somebody will try to damage or completely destroy it.

Whilst the camera will probably have tracking equipment as well that won't stop somebody from trying to move it - perhaps by a lorry equipped with a HIAB crane or just a tow vehicle with a long chain.

Also it looks quite large and bulky. If that unit ever does come to the UK then the operator should have good insurance in case it's left in a dangerous place and somebody hits it.

Regards,

"Shatterproof is not a challenge" Laughing Out Loud

Looks a bit dodgy positioned there though. I would hope if they end up over here that it wouldn't be protruding out from the safety barrier causing people to swerve!

It looks like a skip, will it need a permit to be parked on the highway ?

So what if it's bullet proof. An aerosol can of paint or a roll of gaffa tape over the window would disable it. It looks easy to reach. In terms of safety and positioning it is 'the other side of the barrier' where the workmen etc are, so no danger to either of the lanes currently flowing past.

Would these cameras even be legal in the UK without a change to the law?

I believe that in the UK you need two forms of speed recording for the prosecution, so the radar/laser speed reading and the white lines on the road to measure distance travelled or a copper stating that he thought the vehicle was speeding so he pointed the speed gun at it.

As I will be driving in France next week, knowing where that was might be useful please. Shocked

I assume the one in Darren's post is photoshopped ? Otherwise it is less a camera, and more a width restriction on a motorway.

Saw one on my trip today. Sited to catch motorists approaching a static gatso. This one was placed just before it and facing oncoming traffic, presumably to catch those who know the location of the fixed camera and hit the brakes at the last moment!
