People who do high mileage tend to travel on MWays I suspect, and there does not seem to be a lot wrong with the Garmin's motorway routeing. |

Now you say that, oh you did, but I seem to recall a few posts where opting for the shortest route was taking people off the motorway and down short stretches of A roads or even off then straight back on again. _________________ DashCam:

Why would you select the shortest route. By definition, it will take you off the MWay and back on again if it's shorter. It's when you select the quickest route and it does the same sort of thing that's the bummer or takes you off a reasonably good road onto a narror track because it thinks it is shorter/quicker.
It does not apply enough 'weight' to the class/width.windiness of roads. |

If I select the quickest route from Heathrow to Malvern it takes me almost to Birmingham on the motorways then back down again. I think it's an additional 30 to 40 miles.
The best route, which is almost the shortest takes in loads of fast A roads and having done both is slightly quicker by the shortest route depending on the time of day. Plus it's a far nicer drive than the boring motorways.
Problem is, there is a left hand curve on the M40 by High Wycombe and the actual shorter route is to come off and immediately rejoin having sat at the lights under the junction
Fortunately my Honda Alpine job doesn't do this. _________________ DashCam:

My point exactly. It seems that Garmin do not apply sanity checks on relative road distance. Who the hell would go 30 miles further to save a couple of mins. That's why I say display several routes on the map at the same time so that the user can apply the sanity check even it the algorithm doesn't. |

A quick glance at the screen should reveal the error and allow you to ignore it. _________________ DashCam:

But why is the 'error' there in the first place when others do not make the same 'error'? |

Garmin's have always had a few funnies in their routing - ever since my first i3 there have been instances where the unit wants to take you off the motorway only to rejoin at the same junction.
They're not infallible but the Drive range has some pretty clever route shaping so if you are finding it takes you a different way to what the user thinks is a better way you can now do this by 'dragging the route'. The neat touch is that you can see what this adds/subtracts from your ETA - assuming you have to do this when stationary! _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

Very often Garmin will be supplying new devices with the missing software versions, then sweeping it all up for those with older devices, so 3.80, 3.90 and 4.00 are probably out there somewhere _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
