Speed cameras in mobile police vans caught more than 2,700 drivers on just one stretch of road in North Yorkshire in 12 months.

The road, the A19 southbound stretch of the road at South Kilvington, near Thirsk, proved to be the most lucrative in the county bringing in a surplus of £163,000.

The police commented: "The money generated by the safety camera vans came almost entirely from the fees drivers paid to attend education courses. The £163,000 surplus was strictly ring-fenced for other road safety initiatives. None of the funding generated by safety camera vans went into the general policing budget."

The number of people killed or seriously injured on North Yorkshire’s roads has fallen from over 1,600 in 1990/91 to less than 600 in 2014/15, but police and crime commissioner Julia Mulligan said that the county still had one of the highest accident rates in the country with 44 people who died on North Yorkshire roads last year.

She commented: "There is proven evidence that nine of those deaths were the result of speeding. However, speed was a probable factor in many more of the deaths and serious injuries that took place."

Three mobile police vans currently operate at over 130 sites across North Yorkshire, but the county is to get six new ones. They will be smaller and more able to park in rural spots deemed to be unsuitable for the existing vehicles.
