I bought a Garmin Camper 660 LMT-D and have just started to find my way round it and as a new starter that's a problem.

The lack of obvious information was annoying in that there was nothing in the box that pointed one towards the simple question. "How do I switch it on?" I don't miss the massive volumes of information that one rarely even opened that used to come with a new computer but I do expect something a little better than nothing.

Anyway, by playing around with the GPS I managed to make it operational and it looks good but I will see tomorrow when I go out with a car and my wife who has been corrupted by a TomTom.

I was looking forward to be able to create a route map of a number of Caravan Sites I want to explore on the British South Coast. However, although I eventually discovered how to download the "Owners Manual" its a clumsy document with no obvious search facility.

So, I have a question: Could anyone point me towards how I can create a route map on my computer using Garmin mapping?

Sure. First thing to realise is that BaseCamp (Garmin's mapping program) will read the map off your device when it's connected to your computer but ideally you want to install the same map you have on your device to your computer.

However you can't do that straight away unless your device has an older map on it. Next time you update your map through Express (Garmin's updater program) click on Map options and select Install to device and computer.

Whichever way you're using maps with BaseCamp there are good instructions about creating routes in the following links:

Many thanks for the information. I will now go to bed and get up fresh enough to start learning in the morning.

I am an 80 year old not very technical man trying to do to many things at a time. The anti virus/malware I use, Emsisoft, is very reliable so I stopped trying to download Basecamp.

After a cup of tea I sat and thought about it and a vague memory of Basecamp came back. I opened "Search the web and Windows on my Windows 10 and Lo and Behold found that I had downloaded it a few days ago. I have no idea why Emsisoft allowed me to download Basecamp before but not this time.

There is a selection of helpful suggestions with what I downloaded and adding the suggestions I have been given on this forum I am going to start learning as soon as I have completing my hour of enforced exercise tidying up garden so thank you all again.

The thing is you should be very careful of from where you download programs as sometimes 'rogues' get hold of the downloads and attach all kinds of nasty stuff. Always go to the supplier's web site, Garmin in this instance to get the download.

Basecamp can be quite frustrating at times but persevere and it does the job.

One tip is to zoom in when placing a route marker as its easy to place it up a side street or the wrong side of a dual carriageway. Then the fun begins when you try to follow that route!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion on using Basecamp. Regarding my recalcitrant Emisoft I think that I may have tried to download form a dodgy Web Page and that was what it blocked, anyway I've got it now, Basecamp I mean. I will get working on it when I have done an hour or so in the garden to avoid harassment from my wife who see's my computer as a competitor for her affections.
