No one has figured out how so far, in fact I'm not aware of any custom maps for any of the major players i.e. CoPilot, Navman, TomTom, Deluo etc.

I wonder how long it will be before maps go the same way as the GPS receivers. It would be great to have an open standard for map data so that the punter could decide whose maps to buy and, more importantly, the map data business would become much more competitive.

If you do not make decent maps, nobody is going to buy from you when they upgrade. Also, when I "upgrade" my street atlas, it costs me a few Euros. The thought of having to pay €150 or more to change maps does not fill me with glee. As this market expands, there is an opportunity there for a suitably entrepreneurial company.

I'm afraid to say this is unlikely to happen, the major players have invested heavily to produce the map data and software authors pay heavily for the right to use it. Navteq and TeleAtlas would never use an open data format nor would they permit a licensee to release maps containing their data in an open format, why would they?
