I've been creating POI icons for TomTom for years with MS Paint (Windows) with no problem.

I've recently changed over to a Mac and I'm using Paintbrush which is a baisic paint program like MS Paint for Windows.

Problem

I edited a previously working icon (i.e. 24x24 pixels) with Mac Paintbrush and saved it on my TomTom app (on iPhone). Instead of the icon, there's the red square on the map BUT the icon is shown correctly on the Navigate to POI screen list of POI categories.

If I load the old icon (initially created by MS Paint for Windows) back to the TomTom app then the icon appears OK in the POI category list and also the map.

What am I doing wrong

OK apart from using a Mac? Wink Rolling Eyes

I'm guessing that the bitmap or colour is wrong but I don't see how to change it in Mac Paintbrush.

Are there any Mac users out there who successfully create POI icons for TomTom who can tell me what I'm doing wrong or suggest a paint package that will create .bmp icons correctly for TomTom.

I know that the red square means that the .bmp file is wrong but as a Mac novice I'm not are what to do.

Many thanks,

Morning

Can you send me both icons so I can see what the bitmap difference is. It's not going to solve it but it will help a Google search when you know what paintbrush is doing wrong.

Apple strikes again Wink

I've sent you an email with the icons.

There is a small difference in the image info.

Very tiny change though. I've sent you a new 2017 back which mimics the 2016 info. See if that works.

Hi K,

Thanks for the icon. I loaded it onto my TomTom iOS app and the icon shows in the POI category list, the map screen and navigation screen.

What did you do to the file, I presume that you just opened it in MS Paint (Window) and saved it as a bmp file?

Thanks also of the side by side comparison. The differences I saw were:
Pixels per Inch 96.012 (worked) where as 96.000 failed.
Image (on disk) 1k (worked) and 2k (failed)

These findings show that Paintbrush (Mac) whilst very similar to MS Paint (Windows) its files are saved just differently enough to cause a problem.

Regards,

OK, Paintbrush (Mac) doesn't save .bmp file correctly. So time to try another app.

Paint 2 (Mac) doesn't save .bmp file correctly either. Sad

I used PaintShopPro X7

Loaded in your 2016, added the '17' bit then saved it.

I used PSP because it allowed me to zoom into grid level to add the 17 more easily.

When I'm next at the PC shall I do a 18 and 19 Laughing

HI K,

I'm working through the paint programs that I have installed on my Mac.

Unfortunately, Paint Shop Pro isn't available for the Mac.

I have a feeling that this is going to be similar to the .csv problem where Mac doesn't save files in UTF-8 unless you find an app that can be forced to save in UTF-8 (like TextEdit) but this time I think the Mac can't save a .bmp file in exactly the correct format of Windows BMP. I'm just hoping that I can find an app that can be encouraged to save the .bmp file correctly, i.e. like Windows and not how Mac thinks it should be saved.

I'm happy to create icons in Paintbrush (Mac) but I just need to find that ap that can load and save the file so that TomTom can use it properly. The app may be local or online but I'll keep looking.

Fortunately, icons don't need to be changed as much as the .csv or .ov2 file so I'm not so worried - I'd just like a nice fix for this.

Thanks for the offer to create "18" and "19", but "17" was really only there as a visual reference to see whether a change had worked.

I've gotta go to work now, but I will be carrying on the investigation tomorrow.

If there's anyone else who's reading this thread knows how to get a Mac to create a correct BMP file icon for TomTom to use then please join in the thread. Thumbs Up

Thanks for your help.

Problem solved Thumbs Up

1. Create icon in Paintbrush
2. Open in GIMP and Export As .bmp (advanced options select 24 bit)

Why use Paintbrush?
It's a nice simple to use paint application.

Why use GIMP?
GIMP was the only paint application that I had on my Mac that could create/export a .bmp file that my TomTom could use.

Honourable mention
I had a few paint applications on my Mac, and Gimp was the last to be tested. Before I tested GIMP I tried a few online image editors and the first to work was:

http://convertimage.net

If you don't want to load GIMP onto your Mac then you could use an online editor.

Personally, I prefer to have tools on my Mac instead of online. As my Mac is a MacBook Pro I can take it anywhere and if I don't have internet access I can still create a TomTom icon.

Regards,
