August 2014 will mark the 100h anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in which more than 9 million soldiers died fighting. 6th June also marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy.

As a result, a great many war veterans and their families will be planning trips to France to pay their respects to the fallen at Commonwealth War Graves.

If you or someone you know is planning a trip to visit a war grave, PocketGPSWorld have a War Cemetery POI set available to download free from our POIs page. The set contains 515 locations in France alone.

The download can be found in the Special Interest POI category.

I remember as a teenager in the fifties on an exchange visit to France being amazed at the sight of the war graves. Not just the sheer numbers and metronomic layout, but how well kept they were. On my latest visit last year, they were still as immaculate as ever. In these days of vandalising yobs, it is an inspiration to see how beautifully they are maintained.

I went to some in, I think, Belgium when I was about 12 - all I remember was how neat and tidy they all were. Good to see they still are.

Last summer as part of my travels, I visited several CWGC sites in France and Belgium. Along the way I discovered a good Michelin guide book Cemeteries and Memorials in Belgium and Northern France http://www.cwgc.org/learning-and-resources/publications/items-for-sale.aspx which I found a great reference with maps to use along side the War Graves POI.
Also useful is the search facility provided by the CWGC on their website http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx which enabled me to search my family. Where several results enabled me to focus & visit the sites where these names where listed. The CWGC searches enabled me to Print off plans for each site & pin point the exact grave plot at each site.

When on holiday anywhere in Europe my wife and I always try to visit the local Commonwealth War Grave to pay our respects.

Thanks for creating this POI.
