Australian police are to introduce undercover speed cameras on Australian beaches.

This new initiative, which involved consultation with 150 local people, follows a number of fatalities on Australia's Sunshine Coast beaches in South East Queensland.

Local police will use laser cameras in an unmarked four-wheel-drive in the Noosa North Shore area, where the speed limit on beaches is 50kph - in the vicinity of camping areas - and 80kph elsewhere.

A police spokesman commented on the "many unnecessary deaths" on the beaches stating: "Every weekend, we get one or two roll-overs or crashes up there. We've tried everything and people don't seem to want to listen. So we're going to have to do something a bit covert and maybe when they get the ticket in the mail they'll think, 'Oh damn there goes some more points'."

I'm a little surprised that on beaches they are allowed to drive at 30mph let alone 50mph. If you are mixing recreational pedestrians who may have had the odd Fosters with motorvehicles moving at speed, how can you not predict injuries? It seems to me that you need more separation, but no doubt that would take an investment of some significance.

I hope that you are implying that's where they should be, not on the pavement?
