Tried to pair the phone with the garmin and the garmin ap on the phone reported that the phone was currently connected to the car Bluetooth and two devices could not be connected at the same time.

Correct, and it's a pain. I've now got my Garmin connected to my HTC One for the SmartLink and my old cheap and cheerful Nokia 6230i is in the boot, permanently connected to the power socket in there and the car hands free telephone bluetooth connects to that.

I found that I could connect the HTC One to both the car and the Garmin but depending on which kicked in first stole the connection.
