I have noticed since 2 updates ago that the background map on my samsung galaxy note phone disapears after about half a mile from home. Today I travelled from London to Manchester and decided to check also on my Galaxy Note Tablet and the same thing was happening on both my Samsung Galaxy Notes I.e. phone and tablet. Now in Manchester with an internet connection and maps appear again, so obviously something to do with this but they were working fine up to 2 weeks ago.
Any helpappreciated
Mick

You need an internet connection to download the maps. Have you changed settings so that you can no longer download mobile data?

Thank you, on checking settings my mobile data had been turned off. Question, will this incur large data cost?,
I am sure not as it never used too but recently I tried the phoned google maps navigation on a 1 hour trip and was notified that evening that I had used 200mb of my 250 mb data allowance. This was using it with satelite map displayed. I think in hindsight this was where I panicked and was turning everything off so it was probably me turning this off.

Using the basic Google maps doesn't use a huge amount of data but it's difficult to quantify.

Satellite view uses a lot more data than the standard road map view.

If you use LIST view then no map is displayed and no data is used.

Thanks Darren
So am I right to assume that although Camera Alert needs an internet connection the actual data usage is very small as I have done many long trips with it on all the time and never gone over my data allowance?

CamerAlert doesn't need a data connection. That's only necessary if you have the map view enabled.

But the standard road map view is very data efficient and doesn't use much data. The satellite view however isn't efficient, it's a series of images, and that can eat into your data allowance very quickly.
