Think you'll need to supply a bit more info than that to get some useful suggestions Smile

What do you want out of a satnav?

Do you want bluetooth?

Capability to store routes?

Traffic info?

etc etc

Have a look at the TT Specs as they can do those.

The Start Series don't have Bluetooth, but the VIA Series does.

At the moment from TT, the VIAs have Lifetime Maps. Smile

I don't know enough about the Garmin range to be able suggest anything.

Any of the Garmin 30/40/50 series will do that but no bluetooth, as an example see here:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_165685_productId_862371_langId_-1?cm_mmc=GooglePPC-_-Google%20Product%20Search-_-Sat%20Nav%20%26%20GPS%2FCar%20Sat%20Nav-_-Garmin%20Nuvi%2040%20Sat%20Nav%20-%20UK%20%26%20ROI&source=ppc&adtype=pla&_$ja&_$$ja=tsid:37143#tab1

If bluetooth is that important he'll need to pay more, just use this site to compare models having ticked the boxes you want on the left, but note they are Garmin prices, generally cheaper if you shop around:

There was a discussion sometime ago about learner and newly qualified drivers using satnavs. They do have errors and situations that need informed interpretation. Probably someone should get used to using the roads, before adding in the complexity of following satnav directions.

yes I agree, but i also think that after a short period of time they can take the stress out of unknown town centre lanes control.

in May he wants to go on a long journey and by then he should know the shortfalls

chipmonk

Just to put your mind at rest, that's not true. Smile

That's correct. All new TomToms use a totally different file system and connection method (something do do with the big court case that Microsoft brought against a few companies over use of FAT32.

If you haven't found it already, you need to use "MyTomTom" rather then the old "Home" to get updates.

Download it here:
https://tomtom.com/en_gb/mytomtom/getstarted/

MyTomTom is also the only way to access the device to add stuff like POIs, voices, car cursors etc.

Full instructions are here:

Installation Guide (OV2)

MyTomTom uses your internet browser as part of it's interface and some people who use Internet Explorer as their browser have problems selecting more than one file at a time to upload to the device.
If you suffer from that , there's an alternative method using a zip file here:

Installation Guide (Single Zip File)
