I am now on ver 9.465 and it seems Ok but I seem to have lost the lane graphics when approaching a junction. Should the "show lane images" icon in preferences be as it appears or "hide lane images" with a red cross through it ? the latter is a bit ambiguous as is saying "hide lane images" is not selected or is selected ? I'm a bit frazzled afted a 4 hour drive home from Leeds so bear with me .... Embarassed

Also my 720 died after about an hour in the car this morning despite being fully charged over night and being plugged into the socket in the car. If I leave it turned off for a couple of hours and plugged in it lasts around 40 minutes. Its plugged into my PC and has just told me it will shut down in 45 seconds. I did notice in the car a low battery warning even though the charging bar was moving .

Faulty battery ? I remember a post about changing them quite a while ago...or should I just buy a new TT ?

On that subject I have paid for a year map update...do I lose this if I buy a new TT ?

Sorry for all the questions....

1. It should show 'hide lane images' if you WANT lane images to show.

2. Are your cables the proper ones supplied with the unit (like the mount for the 720 & car charger)? Sounds as if it could be a battery issue not getting the required charge. When you ARE connected to the car charger, is it showing a battery symbol in driving view (which would mean it is NOT getting power from the car charger and therefore thinks it's running on battery)?

All the TomTom buttons are like this. The button text shows you "what will happen if you tap it" NOT "What the situation is now".

For example,. if the sound is currently turned up, the button to mute it will say "Turn off sound". But if it is already muted, then the button will say "Turn on sound"

So in the same way, if the button says "Hide lane images" then that must mean they are currently turned ON.

That's very good for an original battery ina device as old as the Go720!

Don't worry about that, it's normal. A PC cannot provide as much charging power as a dedicated car charger, so the TomTom automatically turns off after a short while of non-use in order to get the battery charged quicker.

Again that's normal (for a while) if the battery is VERY low when you start charging.

But if it continues, or you get less than say 30 minutes from a full charge, then it may be worth swapping the battery IF you want to use it on battery power.

But if you only ever use it in the car, then I wouldn't bother. My Go940 can only work on battery for about 5 minutes, but I always have it running on the charger.

Yes, you'll lose it.
TT HAVE occasionally swapped map subscriptions onto a new device before, but usually only if you tell them the device has been stolen etc.

Thanks Andy.

This is the first time the battery has died this early. problem is even with the car charger plugged in it still switches off after a variety for times from 10 mins to 40 mins. It doesn't seem to want to run on the charger. Having said that the charger was bought as a TT compatible one and I did wonder if it man enough to run the TT on its own....

I suppose I could replace the charger with an official one and/or get a battery anyway

Mikealder changed my battery in less than half a pint, whilst the rest of us sat around chatting. 'Course, he's pretty good at that sort of thing, so if you haven't done it before, either get it done at somewhere like satnavshop, or read his guide.

Sorry, I did misread one part of your post.

I read the bit about getting an hour on battery (which is good), but missed the bit about it also being plugged into the charger at the same time. Not so good...

If it's not a real TT charger, that's probably the first place to look.

I'm not one of these people who say you should only use the branded accessories, a "compatible" charger SHOULD work just as well. But if it was a lot cheaper, then it's obviously something to be slightly suspicious of when things go wrong.

I'm wondering if its the charger as on a USB mains charger battery is charging up as before but TT is not switching off...because its getting enough juice ?

Just ordered a battery anyway from Amazon so I guess the official TT charger @ £13 is worth going for ? Or any recommendations appreciated

Thanks guys.

I'm quite happy to change the battery myself...had a few iPhones in pieces to replace their batteries.

TT has been on charge for 3 hours now from a mains source and its powered off and on turning on battery is still charging. It shows about 90% full which is not too bad but as I watch it its dropped to about 80% in a bout 2 mins. So I reckon at the very least the battery is on its way out as it doesn't appear to hold a charge at all...or at least not very much. I'll go for that first then the charger

I would have done it the other way round!

The unit ought to be able to run on the external power and charge at the same time irrespective of the battery condition. Yours will not although the unit appears to run on battery only for some time.

This really indicates that the charger is not functioning properly.

Is it both the car charger and the USB charger that fail to work? A car charger that works correctly will cost considerably less than £13 from eBay or similar (they start at 99p including delivery!).

At the end of the day they are simply a standard mini USB power unit - nothing TT specific. The right angle connector at the end is useful though (one on eBay for £2.99).

Check that any replacement product can provide a sensible current - 1 amp is about right.

Indeed... I have ordered a charger....the TT one at £13...but thats OK But I do suspect the battery. It could even be the charging circuit in the TT but that seems a bit of a stretch...but either way for £20 I can replace both and if its still poorly I'll probably go for something like a 940 refurb...and probably replace the battery right away as well....

When my 720 died yesterday I switched to my Nokia Lumia 800 phone with Nokia maps...... quite superb......

Sorry David, thanks for replying. It doesn't show a battery symbol when charging. I think the battery is knackered although why it won't run on the car lead alone I don't know. It could simply be its developed a basic fault in the power area and its time to replace it. I'll see how it goes after replacing the battery and charger.

Just got my head around the lane icon... no idea why I never thought about it before Shocked

OK this is odd...I just disconnected my battery to just try the uninstall bit and when I put the TT together again after about 30 mins and turned on I get the TomTom splash screen and the usual disclaimer about using whilst driving. Something I always got when I turned it on. Then I realised I hadn't seen that process over the past few days and when I turn the 720 off and leave it for a while it goes straight into the navigation screen as though it had been in pause.

I only use my 720 once or twice a month so maybe leaving it turned off for a few weeks means the 720 assumes as you're not using it it needs to boot up from scratch again. Is that about right ?

Not given it a long run but on a 40 min journey into work with the new battery and TT car charger everything is solid. No certainty if it was the charger or the battery but given its age a refresh of the battery at the very least is not a bad idea.

Best of all, you haven't been forced to go down market with a newer model!
