Help! Map downloads for Garmin nuvi 1490T

I am going to Europe soon and when I plugged my satnav into the Garmin site they told me that I should update my maps. When I went to do so they wanted $89:00 for a one-off download! The machine only cost £110 in the first place.
I am a real no-brainer with these things and would appreciate some advice on obtaining maps, UK and/or Europe,that would work on my machine and would not force me to sell my house to fund.

Any help would be enormously appreciated.

I agree.

I faced a recent similar experience and decided to change from an older 2200 to a more modern Nuvi 50.

Glad I did as the change to a 5" screen has been good.

The only features I've lost is the breadcrumbs and the auto detect of where it thinks I'm going, neither of which is any real loss to me.

Do nothing

Your satnav will continue to work just fine. My 1490 is a couple of years old and I use it in Europe frequently, I have no trouble using it and only occasionally come across the odd error, but you can get that in any case with the 'latest maps'

I only decided to change because a few local roads have changed from 40 to 30 and I wanted to keep up to date. Plus I secretly fancied a 5" screen.

Otherwise, I agree, stick with your current maps as roads don't change that often to warrant upgrading.

Thank you all for your contributions, I will take your advice. I was a bit thrown when the Hindhead tunnel appeared where there should have been a field and the machine kept trying to take me home along a road that no longer exists by the Devil's Punchbowl! I have a cheap, current road atlas and will revert to that if things go wrong.
