I have used POIEdit on Windows XP successfully many times for converting POI formats. Now on Windows 7 I get an error re file type when doing a 'Save As' to a different format. Does anyone know of a workaround or suitable alternative please?

Having only ever used POI Edit on my XP machines, I just tried installing it on my Wife's laptop which has Windows 7.

Sure enough I had exactly the same problem. For example, if I try to open up an .ov2 file and then save it as Garmin .csv (or vice versa), it throws up an error message complaining the file extension is not correct for the file type, as if it's not actually doing the conversion.

The only work-round I found while I was playing with it was to use "Batch convert" from the file menu.
If you set the source and destination folders to be the same, it does produce copies of all the files in the other format you choose.

Thanks Andy. I'm glad it's not just me with the problem. I will try Batch Convert using a dedicated folder so that I can work on individual files.

I should have mentioned there are a couple of alternatives to POIEdit too.

You might like to look at POI Converter from our very own "oldie".

Or there's POIEditor which does it on-line.

Or I'm sure GPSBabel could do it too, but that's always looked a bit scary to me!

I tried POIEditor online and although I'm sure it worked once before, yesterday it just created empty files! I have emailed them but no response to date.

I will have a look at POI Convertor as suggested.

Thanks for your help.

Just had a quick look at POI Convertor and it looks very good. The ease of switching between TomTom ov2, Google Earth kml and Excel formats covers all I need. Smile

Try this:

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Dnote Software\PoiEdit2007 and right click on PoiEdit.exe. Select Properties. Click on the 2nd tab "Compatibility". Tick the "Run this program in compatibility for:" box and select "XP (SP3)" from the dropdown. Click OK and restart the program.

When I did this, the error was gone and it saved the OV2 (9 entries) to a CSV I could open in NotePad. What a Garmin would have made of it ....

You should do jbrails... that's exactly the same version as my wife has on her laptop.

As JockTamsonsBairn says, right click on the PoiEdit.exe program file, select 'Properties' from the context menu, and the 2nd tab in the window that opens should be "Compatibility".

I just tried it and it works brilliantly. Not just a pretty face, that Jock!

Thanks Guys. I swear I did exaclty what was suggested but there wasn't a compatibilty tab. However, it's there now and as you say it works fine. I don't think I will worry about how that happened now that it works again.
Thanks again - problem solved and another useful convertor program found in the process. Cheers.
