Some people have reported that, but I have at least two old TomToms with VERY knackered batteries that still work fine on charger power.

No need for all that...
There are two methods you can use for adding POIs (including the cameras) to the new models.
Once you've added everything (.ov2, .bmp, .ogg) the first time, then on subsequent updates you can just un-zip the download and ONLY add the updated .ov2 files if you want to.
You get a standard Windows file selector to choose what you want to update, it all works fine.
Have a look at the PGPSW install guide, there are lots of pictures showing what you see.

Or you can use the special version of the zip file ("MyTomTom Zip") and it will upload everything in one go.
That method will overwrite the old .bmps and .oggs as it does it, but there's no harm in that unless you use different icons or warnings from the normal ones (like I do).
How does the system get backed up, if you can't just use Windows Explorer? At the moment, I like to keep an older version on the unit and a new version on the SD - in case of trouble, I can pull the SD and a "known good" system is available. Is that possible on the newer units?
Nope. No "personal" backup of the main system allowed.
You can back up all your personal stuff (like POIs, Favourites, colour schemes, voices etc.) but the maps and system are all stored on the TT servers, and they can be re-downloaded if required.
There is also a "last ditch" emergency recovery technique that can restore the last known good version of software on a "bricked" unit. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)

Very good question never thought about that, when TomTom occasionally ;-) screw up on new Navcores it has saved my bacon a few times just to go back to an earlier backup. In fact I would always back it up before I updated, as I had so little trust in the updates!!!!

See above, sdm. There's this emergency recovery system that should return you to the last stable build (as defined by TomTom!)
Out of interest, if you have already got one of the new NAV3 models that use MyTomTom, can you have a look at the info screen you get when you go to Settings (last page / Me and My Device / About my device
On the line where it gives the GPS and Boot version numbers, is there another item at the end, called "Backup"? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)
