I recently read the press release of the new SiRFstar chip.

Other than appearing to be a tick box exercise of being able to track more/different satellites, is there any practicable beneft ? e.g. would this improve GPS positioning or just provide a faster fix.

They also tout benefits of being able to navigate indoors. Other than a video on youtube I'm wondering if anyone has got practical experience on how this works and the accuracy.

We had a demo of this technology at MWC earlier in the year.

Article and videos are here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/CSR-show-SiRFstarV-and-SiRFusion-for-indoor-positioning-2054.php

My wife recently bought me a 5" Chinese unit on which I installed my iGO8.

It has SiRFstar5 chipset and what a difference.

Even after several days switched off it picks up 7 or 8 sats within about 10 to 15 seconds. When warm or hot start it is instant.

Picks up a number of sats indoors, varies according to position.

Athermic windscreens no problem.

Haven't yet lost the signal, even in the valleys of Monmouthshire.

When transferring 'tracks' to Google Earth the route shows either on the road or very close to it where before I was in fields, rivers or break-dancing on the spot.

Or to be it briefly.... Pretty damn good.

I'm guessing that it's a Windows Mobile device. Can I ask what it is ?

The only unit I've seen that has the chipset is the LG Optimus 4X HD which is just recently available. I'm surprised it's not mentioned on their website, I saw it at CSR's site. Shame as it could be a feature that people might want.

It's a Chinese unbranded, this one or similar. (So many look alike).
