I have posted a specific help request elsewhere, but can someone tell me if there is some legislative requirement for the maximum sound output of new units?
I recently bought a Nuvi which is now languishing in my wife's glovebox as the sound level couldn't be heard above the radio (on in the convertible with the roof down) whereas the Tom Tom One was loud enough. I've also had this problem on a TomTom Start when compared to the XXL.

I haven't got the best hearing to start with and I like Rock music (these two facts might be related ;) ) but with the Start, I couldn't hear it above the conversation I was having with my passenger, let alone the radio.

Not so far as I'm aware...

If there was some new law, wouldn't any new car radio have to be subject to the same controls as well?

I think it's probably more to do with the constant battle for thinner and thinner sat-navs.
You can't do much to beat the laws of physics.... a small flat loudspeaker will never sound as good (or go as loud) as a big fat one like they used to have in the earlier models.

P.S. I've answered in your other topic too.
