Statisticians (spelt with an a not an o by the way) will provide figures based on fact, not conjecture....

There speaks a statistician, I reckon! Laughing

Please accept my apologies about the o, but you seem to have failed to notice that I spelled implication with a n, for which I also apologise. Rolling Eyes

I see, the statititions provide facts, and all the others twist them to suit their needs. I did imply that I am cynical, didn't I?

In the days when I used to smoke, 50+ years ago, I was the habit of flicking my fag over the ash tray. A harmless enough thing in itself, I thought, requiring only a moment's inattention from the road.

One morning, however, while driving along my habitual route to work, I flicked my fag and to my astonishment I saw its glowing end detach itself. It fell between my thighs and ended up in the region of my crotch. Naturally, my sense of panic was immediate.

Cursing aloud I rammed my foot on the brake, raised myself up off the seat and made shooing motions with the back of my hand, pushing the still-smouldering portion of my Park Drive into the footwell where it was duly stamped upon.

The driver immediately behind me, at the wheel of an Escort, managed somehow to stop in time, avoiding a collision. The car behind him, however, a Hillman Countryman, was unable to stop in time and it ploughed into the Escort, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

Today I navigate by listening to the spoken commands of my Garmin Zumo, which includes warnings of police cameras. I rarely look at the satnav's screen. Occasionally the Zumo will freeze and to bring it back on line it has be rebooted. I do this only with the car safely parked.

Distraction at the wheel can have devastating consequences out of all proportion to their initial cause. Trust me! Sad

Certainly no more distracted than the lorry drivers I've seen reading a map spread out over the steering wheel, or the lady in a convertible I overtook who was writing out a cheque (I was on the motorbike so was able to see this quite clearly).

Just had the Spring newsletter from TT. They seem to be encouraging you to provide your friends with information about the progress of your journey by social media. Given the stats on the enormous proportion of young drivers who think it OK to text while driving, I think this is irresponsible.
