TomTom problems, starts when you need to update Live HD traffic / map services from the "MY TomTom web page" to your computer then from the computer down loading updates to the device. The Sat Nav device becomes inoperable.

Requiring a lengthy call to customer services. After all that time on the phone and reseting the Sat nav, it never works properly again....  Switching on and off at random, not connecting to Live HD traffic, losing signals to mention but a few problems....

Has anyone had a similar experience? How did you resolve?

No I have a 1005 and I have had no such problem when or after updating

Firstly, it really helps if you can give some specific details in your posts, like what model you are dealing with, what software version it is running, exactly what the updates you were downloading were. Stuff like that....


Now, if you would like to try something MAJOR to fix this, here are the steps to return your device to an earlier "recovery" software build.


1. Switch the TomTom on and then press the power button for ~20 seconds until you hear the drum-roll sound (like a normal re-boot), but KEEP holding it down, until you get to a diagnostics screen.

2. Now release the power button and then press it 3 times very quickly (literally - one-two-three, without waiting between presses).

3. The device should go then into the so-called 'recovery mode'.
A screen will appear with the picture of a device, computer and a red cross, something like that).

4. Now, while it is in this state, connect the device to PC and open MyTomTom, and then a recovery build will be installed on your device. Last I saw, it was the 10.501.xxxxxx (2042) build.

5. If that is successful, then the next time you connect up, MyTomTom should update it back to the latest build again.

These instructions come directly from TomTom and I've used the procedure myself once, but if you want to try it, on your own head be it!
