I know that there has been interest here in the new French laws concerning speed cameras and, as I suspect that you don't read the French newspapers, I thought you would like a summary of an article in the Le Figaro newspaper a few days ago.

There are to be 400 new cameras installed over the next 12 months (lots of opportunities for Lifetime Subscriptions !). There are currently 2080 cameras in mainland France. There will be no warning panels.

Every car will be obliged to carry a breath-testing kit.

As already discussed before, it will be illegal for SatNavs to give warnings of cameras.

But ….., but ….., but ….., the French are crafty when it comes to avoiding unpleasant legislation. SatNavs will be allowed to give warning of "danger zones". (Please don't ask me what the difference is, except for the need to change the spoken warning and the icon.)

The objective is to reduce road deaths by 3,000 per year.

The article did not say when the new regulations would be coming into effect, just "bientôt".

I hope I am not repeating something that someone else has written somewhere else !

Philip

Thanks Philip, the breath testing kit is going to be a nice little earner for the ferry/eurotunnel operators I can see!

The situation is, as always with the French, clear as mud.

..and depending upon the kit, they either need recalibrating regularly, or replacing regularly. This will obviously stop the French drinking..!

The article suggested that the kits would cost €1.50 to €2.00, but didn't say when they should be used.

At least it is clear when I have to wear the Hi-Viz jacket I keep in the car (bought for very little in a French supermarket). The problem is that you have to put it on before you get out of the car.

My days of dressing and undressing in a car have g... / never existed.
