Welcome

Have a look at the various reviews and posts in the forums. There are many good and popular choices, but without any idea of what you're looking for, where you are and what your budget is, it's impossible to make any recommendations.

The dedicated devices are much less flexible than a Pocket PC based setup, which can not only be used as a PDA in its own right, but for various "add-on" functions like speed camera alerting.

A very popular choice right now for the UK is TomTom Navigator 3. Like all these systems, it's not perfect, but it had a dedicated and enthusiastic following. Hopefully there'll be a software update soon that will address some of the issues people are currently having with Navigator 3.

Several of the advertisers at the right have bundles based around Navigator 3 that include all you need for around your budget.

I'd go for a Pocket PC that includes Bluetooth if you can, even if you opt for wired GPS. I'd also try for a 256MB memory card rather than 128MB (which is a little on the small side). That may push you a little over 450 pounds, but not by very much.
