It staggers me that some people are happy to pay TomTom what I consider to be extortionate prices for map updates. Either they are rich enough so that it doesn't bother them or the company are paying ! My son has just purchased a Garmin for the very reason that lifetime map updates are free, whereas I, who use my Tom Tom GPS about 6 or 7 times a year (OAP) am required to pay £33.75 p.a. Not bothering this year, as last time I paid for 2 years worth and often found that the maps were NOT up to date, e.g. road junctions which have changed are not shown and in particular mini-roundabouts are often missing. The junction on the A404 at Hazlemere X-roads between Amersham and High Wycombe, has not been altered for 10 years or more, but is incorrect on the TT maps. Have told them but nothing happens.

The Garmin (Navteq) are just as good / bad as the TomTom mapping as far as errors / updates concerned

TomTom units can come with lifetime mapping updates in some countries, although not the UK - yet - it won't be long

Mio have just launched a unit for £120 which includes lifetime map updates (TomTom Maps on the Mio)

As to rich or company paying - for me it isn't either. I just use my sat nav daily on multi-trips and it is worth less than 10p a day to me to know while not perfect, I have the best mapping I can

If I used my sat-nav like you, a few times a year, then I agree - the map updates are probably not worth it, just replace the unit when you need to

NO maps, whether from TT, Garmin or anyone else are EVER "free", that's just marketing blurb.
They just factor in the price in some other way.

And by the way, one-off Garmin maps are MUCH more expensive than TomTom ones...
From their websites today.....

Garmin City Navigator® Europe NT - € 93,00 (I make that about £73.50)

TomTom Europe - Single Map(v8.80) - £44.95 (... and at least TomTom can quote the prices in sterling!)
