I had an opportunity to connect the UK model Go1005 to a protocol tester to see what capabilities it reports to a network.

The SIM reports an IMSI with MCC/MNC 204/04 (Vodafone Netherlands). This means that it is technically roaming when switched on in any country other than the Netherlands, obviously Tomtom are not paying normal data roaming tariffs!

The reported radio capabilities are:
Radio dual band 900(E)/1800 (can never work in USA).
GPRS attach only (no circuit switched services)
GPRS multislot class 10 (max 4 DL and max 2UL with max sum of 5 timeslots)
No EGPRS capability
No 8psk capability

The latter 2 parameters indicate that it is from the economical end of the GPRS modem catalogue, and does not benefit from the data throughput that might be available on an EDGE network.

There is no 3G capability.

Interesting. I had often wondered if it did EDGE or 3G and if it would be worth pulling out the SIM and putting into a phone or tablet for free data while travelling :D

Contrary to common belief, the SIM does not actually have any control of the availability of GPRS, EDGE or 3G services. That is all controlled by the subscriber information held in the network HLR (linked to the IMSI of the SIM).

The Tomtom SIM is very unlikely to be of any use if fitted to another device, as it will only be authorised to use an APN which is part of a Tomtom "walled garden", and would have no access to the greater internet (even Google search etc would be proxied and unusable).

I have not been able to check the APN (and possible QOS profile) used by the device, but might try again later if I have time.
